The Washington Huskies nearing the end to their second season under current head coach Jedd Fisch. The season will conclude in the Los Angeles Bowl against the Boise State Broncos at 5 p.m. PT on Dec. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.
The Huskies are still building the program under Fisch and recently landed the 12th-best 2026 recruiting class in the country according to 247Sports.
But a former Washington player under the former Dawgs coaching regime was a popular player this year, at least among sports memorabilia collectors.
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) recently put out a list of the most popular trading cards of 2025, which was complied in a recent article from Cydney Henderson of USA Today.
PSA, which specializes in grading the level of various types of trading cards ranging from sports to Pokemon, based its rankings on the amount of cards graded. Cultural icons of past and present, like six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and current WNBA phenom Caitlin Clark, were among the highest-collected cards this year.
On the football end of things, quarterbacks dominated collector's binders.
According to Henderson's article and PSA's rankings, the six-most collected football cards, and eight of the top 10, were quarterbacks. The top six included last year's rookie of the year and current Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and this season's sophomore phenom and MVP candidate, New England Patriots signal caller Drake Maye.
According to the rankings, former Huskies quarterback Michael Penix was the sixth-most football card of 2025, with PSA receiving over 75,600 cards to grade.
Penix played with Washington from 2022-23 under former UW and current Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. In his pair of seasons with the Huskies, Penix was the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year ('22), led the NCAA in passing yards ('23), was a Maxwell Award winner ('23) and was a consensus first-team All-American ('23).
While donning the purple and gold, Penix threw for 9,544 yards and 67 touchdowns to go with 19 interceptions.
Penix helped lead Washington to the College Football Playoff national championship in the 2023-24 season, where the Huskies ultimately fell to the Michigan Wolverines 34-13.
Penix was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He spent most of his rookie season sitting behind veteran signal-caller Kirk Cousins but saw action in five games and made three starts.
Penix entered this season as the starter for the Falcons. In nine games played and started, he completed 60.1% of his passes for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Penix's season came to an early end after he underwent season-ending surgery to repair a partially-torn ACL on Nov. 19.
