Fisch won't be getting the Michigan job, meaning that he'll stay in Seattle.
It's official. After weeks of speculation, University of Washington head football coach Jedd Fisch will not be getting the University of Michigan head coaching job.
It was trending this way for a few days now, but On3 reported on Friday that the Wolverines are hiring former Utah head coach Kyle Whitingham.
Michigan had previously fired head coach Sherrone Moore for an inappropriate relationship with a football team staff member. However, the firing came after most of the hiring cycle was done, limiting the number of possible candidates. That, and the fact that Fisch had previously been an assistant at Michigan, made him a trendy name to watch.
Now the Huskies can move forward
Washington went 9-4 this season and won the LA Bowl in Fisch's second season in Seattle. Keeping him was important in terms of keeping program momentum, but also in terms of keeping players and recruits committed.
Given the nature of the transfer portal today, had Fisch left, there could have been a mass exodus from the program. Him staying at the university should keep most things status quo on Montlake.
With quarterback Demond Williams Jr. returning, the Huskies should have a dynamic offense again in 2026. However, they are losing running back Jonah Coleman and receiver Denzel Boston. Both players recently declared for the NFL Draft.

How about what's next for Fisch?
Only Fisch knows exactly what he wants moving forward, so speculating is a fairly futile exercise. That said, perhaps the university will give him a contract extension, incentivizing him to stay in the future. Furthermore, Fisch has been traveling to different jobs around the country for the better part of two decades. Perhaps he would welcome staying in Seattle and laying down some roots in the way he's never been able to before.
