The Washington Huskies football team officially checked off a major box in the Jedd Fisch era their last contest against the Maryland Terrapins on Oct. 4 at College Park, Md.
Washington beat Maryland 24-20. It was the Huskies' first Big Ten win of the season and improved their record to 4-1 on the season. But, most importantly, it was Washington's first road Big Ten win since Fisch was hired before the 2024 season.
The Huskies received votes in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll as a result of the win, which they did in dramatic fashion.
Washington was down 20-0 against the Terrapins in the third quarter. The Huskies scored 24 unanswered points to ultimately win the game.
"Learned a lot about our team this past week," Fisch said in a weekly news conference Monday. "Learned about a team that will fight all 60 minutes. I think we have outscored our opponents 74-10 in the fourth quarter. I think that's a great indication of the way our guys get better as the game goes on."
Washington's defense shut down Maryland for the final 26 minutes of the game to secure the win. The Terrapins opened the third quarter with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took three minutes, 35 seconds off the board.
After Maryland's quarter-opening touchdown drive, the Huskies forced the Terrapins to punt on three consecutive drives and forced a turnover on downs the second-to-last drive of the game. The last drive Saturday ended with Washington taking a knee.
"I think what happened was, we settled in at halftime," Fisch said. "We had a good idea of how to get off the field on third down against them. They came out in the first drive (of the second half) and they hit on a couple things. ... And after that our guys turned it up a notch. They understood the importance of getting off the field.
"They continued to play better at what we're asking them to do. More guys are getting experience every time they go out and play. That's a beautiful part of playing younger players — every time they go play they get a little better, they get a little more experience."
The Huskies will hope to keep the momentum from the road win going this weekend. Washington will return home for a game against Rutgers at 6 p.m. PT on Friday at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
"Got a great challenge ahead of us with Rutgers," Fisch said. "(Greg Schiano) is a fantastic football coach, has headed a great program. We went to New Jersey a year ago and they beat us 21-18. We need to see if we can play better this year than we did last."
