Are We Underrating the Bills Defense?

For much of the offseason, the conversation surrounding the Buffalo Bills defense has centered on uncertainty.

Questions about Bradley Chubb's health, concerns about the secondary and the reliance on younger players have all led to skepticism about what this unit can become in 2026. On the surface, those concerns are understandable. Buffalo is counting on several players to either bounce back, step up, or continue developing.

But what if we're looking at this defense the wrong way? What if, instead of focusing on the questions, we should be paying more attention to the upside?

The Bills may not have the most complete defense in the NFL on paper, but they have enough talent throughout the roster to be significantly better than many people seem to expect.

It starts with the defensive line.

Greg Rousseau has established himself as one of the better edge rushers in football and remains one of the most important pieces of Buffalo's defense. The addition of Chubb gives the Bills another proven pass rusher who, if healthy, should help create more opportunities across the defensive front. Buffalo is hoping Chubb can return to being the player he was earlier in his career and produce enough to prevent opposing offenses from devoting all of their attention to Rousseau.

Then there's Ed Oliver.

Before injuries slowed him down last season, Oliver was playing some of the best football of his career. His impact extends beyond sacks and tackles for loss. When Oliver is winning at the line of scrimmage, it makes life easier for everyone around him. Quarterbacks have less room to step up in the pocket, edge rushers find more favorable matchups, and linebackers can play more freely against the run.

If Oliver returns to that level and Chubb provides the boost Buffalo is hoping for, the Bills suddenly have a defensive front capable of causing problems for any offense they face.

The secondary also deserves more credit than it's receiving.

Christian Benford has quietly developed into one of the NFL's better cornerbacks and enters the season as one of the cornerstones of the defense. The Bills also have a mix of veterans and younger players that should provide new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard with flexibility in how he wants to attack opposing offenses. Whether it's C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Cole Bishop, Dee Alford, or Davison Igbinosun, Buffalo has players capable of filling multiple roles throughout the defensive backfield.

That versatility matters in today's NFL.

Offenses are constantly trying to create favorable matchups and force defenses into uncomfortable situations. The more flexibility a defense has, the easier it becomes to adjust from week to week.

Another reason to be optimistic is that several of Buffalo's most important defensive players are still ascending.

Rousseau continues to improve. Bishop enters a season where expectations will be significantly higher than they were a year ago. Rookie pass rusher T.J. Parker arrives with a chance to carve out a role early in his career. While not every young player will take a major leap forward, the Bills have enough developing talent that it wouldn't be surprising to see one or two emerge as key contributors.

Of course, none of this means the Bills are guaranteed to field an elite defense.

There are legitimate questions that need answers. Chubb has to stay healthy. The secondary has to prove it can consistently hold up when it gets in shootouts. And the run defense needs to finally be better than the bottom five.

When you look at Buffalo's defensive line, the versatility in the secondary, and the number of players who still have room to grow, it's not difficult to see a path where this unit becomes one of the better defenses in the AFC.

Maybe the questions surrounding the Bills' defense are justified. Or maybe we're spending so much time discussing what could go wrong that we're overlooking what could go right. And if enough things do go right, this defense may end up being far better than many people expect.
