This move could be about as good as it gets for the Cowboys' defense.

The Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new defensive coordinator this offseason.

Or at least, that's the general consensus as Matt Eberflus is on the hottest of hot seats.

After 14 weeks of bad defense, I think the writing is on the wall for Eberflus. Even owner Jerry Jones stated that the former Chicago Bears head coach will have three games to put his best foot forward to show he deserves to stay.

But for us, Eberflus shouldn't be returning.

That means a defensive coordinator hunt for Dallas.

I've mentioned Brian Flores from the Minnesota Vikings, whose contract is up at the end of the season, as a candidate.

TV star Rex Ryan will surely announce his candidacy.

Present staffer Aaron Whitecotton could be elevated.

And fans wonder if Al Harris, now in Chicago, might be lured back here.

There will be a host of other names tossed about ... And David Howman of Blogging The Boys has a fine idea.

He has put forth Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as the one Dallas should go after.

"Let’s start with the whale: Jim Schwartz is currently wrecking quarterbacks’ Sundays as the Browns defensive coordinator," Howman writes. "Getting him to Dallas would not exactly be easy. Stealing Schwartz away from the Browns would be as close to a home run as the Cowboys could get."

    A home run? Maybe.

And Schwartz would be a significant upgrade over Eberflus.

Plus, looking at what Schwartz has done with the Browns over the last few seasons, with an inept offense, putting him in charge of the defense is a smart move, not to mention the instant credibility it would give the Cowboys.

    It won't be cheap.

However, Jerry Jones doesn't mind paying head coach money to coordinators, as evidenced by his employment of Dan Quinn.

This does feel like a superb move if Dallas could pull it off, but the franchise needs to make a call.

    I say ...

No more in-house candidates. No more buddies. No more "Jerry's Tree.'' Let's go out and be proactive. Get that "home-run whale" or at least try to.

Shoot for the stars and you'll land on the moon.

And Schwartz in Dallas would send Cowboys Nation over that moon.
