Third-year wideout Brian Thomas Jr. is yet to catch his stride this season, and has begun getting brought up in potential trade discussions. But, the front office has remained steadfast in their stance surrounding his availability.
As the Jacksonville Jaguars exit their bye week and prepare for the back half of the NFL season, the front office remains one of the more-aggressive groups league-wide.
Last season, the Jaguars acquired veteran wide receiver Jakobi Meyers prior to the deadline, which has paid major dividends.
But, this deadline, Jacksonville has been a team marked to potentially move a pass-catcher, with third-year wideout Brian Thomas Jr. continuing to struggle.
After being benched in the second half of Jacksonville's 34-31 loss against the Houston Texans, and going a second-consecutive week with no receptions, head coach Liam Coen addressed the situation.
"Guys have to step up and make plays," Coen said before quickly moving on.
As the trade deadline approaches, Thomas has become a name once again being thrown around in potential trade discussions, but the Jaguars have remained steadfast and confident in their former first-round pick.
To this point, the front office has shown no signs of changing their stance on Thomas, but NFL senior insider Adam Schefter believes this may not be set in stone.
"The Jacksonville Jaguars keep saying that they're not trading Brian Thomas Jr.," Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday. "It wouldn't shock me if their stance changed before the deadline."
With just two more games before the deadline, Thomas has limited opportunity to get back on track before possibly being dealt.
But, he will be back in the rotation for regular snaps on Sunday, as Coen confirmed at his mid-week presser.
"He's going to be able to help us make plays this week..." Coen said. "We're gonna continue to support him and put our arm around him..."
For Thomas, this past bye week came at a good time, allowing the third-year man to refocus and find where he is coming short.
The players around Thomas are also lifting him up, with fellow wideout Travis Hunter echoing his support following the Texans loss.
"I just try to give him motivation," Hunter said. "Keep speaking to him, continue to let him know I’m here for him. If he needs me, I’m right here with him."
Sunday presents a good opportunity for Thomas to have a big day, matching up against the Indianapolis Colts, who have begun selling some of their top players ahead of the looming deadline.
In Thomas' standout rookie season, he terrorized the Colts' secondary, recording 12 catches for 225 yards and a score in his first two meetings against Indy.
Flashing back to his rookie form for a big day against the Colts would be extremely encouraging for Thomas as the deadline gets closer.
