With the New York Giants’ heart and soul out for the rest of the season in running back Cam Skattebo, it’s clear that the rebuilding organization is focusing its attention on the 2026 NFL season.
However, while success may not come until next year, there are measures that General Manager Joe Schoen must take now to prepare the franchise for the future. This includes providing rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart with as much assistance as he needs to aid his growth.
Giants Roundtable Podcast, Ep. 3: Trade Deadline Conspiracy?
Matthew Schmidt and Dylan Feltovich of New York Giants Roundtable discuss the Giants' Week 9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers as well as the NFL trade deadline.
Earlier this season, Dart lost his top receiving threat in second-year star Malik Nabers, which completely hurt the team’s offensive efforts for the remainder of the 2025 season.
And with Skattebo now joining Nabers on the injury reverse, Dart has limited weapons to help his development track.
Luckily for the Giants’ front office, there is a veteran running back who has yet to sign with a team this year, and has plenty of experience with head coach Brian Daboll in running back Zack Moss.
The former Utah standout was the Buffalo Bills’ third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, playing his first two seasons in the league under Daboll. During that stretch, Moss recorded 826 rushing yards and eight touchdowns alongside current Giants running back Devin Singletary.
Since then, the 27-year-old rusher spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and the 2024 season with the Cincinnati Bengals as a backup to both Jonathan Taylor and Chase Brown.
Looking at the state of New York’s running back room heading into week 10, Daboll is forced to use a combination of both Singletary and 2024 fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr.
While many fans believe that Daboll would revert to his running back usage from the 2024 season (Tracy as the lead back), Singletary finished the team’s week nine contest against the San Francisco 49ers with the most carries (8), with Tracy trailing behind the veteran (5).
Moss suffered a season-ending injury last year with the Bengals, ultimately forcing him out of his starting role with the team. If he is fully recovered, it would make perfect sense for the front office to potentially sign Moss due to his familiarity with Daboll’s system.
Outside of Dart using his legs in the run game, there has been no stability on the ground for the Giants with Skattebo out of the lineup. New York’s remaining schedule includes multiple stout defenses, which means Dart needs all the support in order to help him excel throughout the rest of his rookie season.
