With the 2025 NFL season almost officially in the books, the New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen will now look to build up the roster for next season.
The offseason thus far for the Giants has been terrific, as the organization decided to hire former Baltimore Ravens longtime head coach John Harbaugh. This marks a new era of football for the Giants, but with a veteran head coach now at the helm, the front office must add more playmakers.
One of the primary needs that must be addressed this offseason lies within the secondary unit, especially in the cornerback room. And with Cordell Flott set to become a free agent, it’s clear that the Giants need a true lockdown defensive back this offseason.
Luckily, one name that could fill this void on defense may be in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Tennessee star cornerback Jermod McCoy, despite missing the entire 2025 college football season due to an ACL injury, is still widely considered to be the top player in this year's draft.

At 6-foot, 193 lbs., McCoy already possesses the ideal frame to fit the role of a top cornerback, which is paired with elite ball tracking ability on the boundary.
Before he suffered his massive leg injury, McCoy grabbed the attention of the entire college football world with his incredible play with the Oregon State Beavers in 2023. During his time out west, the highly-touted cornerback recorded 31 total tackles, seven pass deflections, and two interceptions.
This led to him entering the transfer portal after the season and landing with the Volunteers.
The chance of scenery did not affect McCoy, however, as he continued his dominant play from the previous season into 2024. As Tennessee’s top defender, he finished his second college season with 44 tackles, nine pass deflections, and four interceptions.
If the Giants ultimately decide to take McCoy in the 2026 Draft, there’s a good chance that the young playmakers could have an immediate impact with New York as a rookie.
While it’s unclear as of now where he could land in the upcoming draft, McCoy’s impressive resume with both Oregon State and Tennessee, using the No. 5 pick on the Volunteers’ top prospect could be exactly what the Giants need to solidify the secondary unit in 2026.
