As the New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen continue to prepare for the offseason, the 2026 NFL Draft remains a hot topic among the fan base.
With the Giants landing the No. 5 pick in the upcoming draft, it’s unclear in which direction the organization will take in round one. One of the primary needs for the struggling franchise this offseason is addressing the cornerback room; however, this year’s draft class does not feature a solidified, elite corner that could be selected within the first five picks.
Luckily for New York, the 2026 cycle has plenty of depth at the position, which means Schoen and the front office could target the defensive back position on day two.
Looking at some of the names that could be in play in the second round, Arizona State cornerback Keith Abney II should easily be in consideration at pick No. 37.
Abney jumped on the radar of many scouts during the 2024 college football season, as he played a key role in the Sun Devils’ defensive efforts. In his 14 games as a sophomore, the talented defender recorded 52 tackles, nine pass deflections, and three interceptions.
His dominant stretch at the college level continued into his most recent season, tallying 44 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and two interceptions in 12 games. In addition to his strong numbers, Abney did not allow a touchdown in 2025, while managing to record the 17th-best PFF defensive grade amongst all FBS cornerbacks (86.3).
Looking at how Abney would fit in the Giants’ defense, his role would ultimately depend on who the organization hires to take over the defense. Abney has proven to be an excellent defensive back in zone coverage. And at 6-foot, 190 lbs., the young defender clearly has the size to play everywhere on the field.
While he may not be viewed as a potential top cornerback for an NFL franchise in year one, Abney could eventually grow into the role with his incredible ball hawk mentality on defense. This could work in the favor of New York, which will now have to try to resign veteran cornerback Cordell Flott this offseason.
