Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur's favorite training camp drill is "hitting the sled."
Hitting the sled is a fundamental football drill where linemen and linebackers practice exploding out of their stance to violently strike and drive a heavy, padded blocking instrument downfield.
LaFleur, who’s known as an offensive guru and scheme creator, knows that football games are actually won and lost by the big guys in the trenches.
"It’s what they do," LaFleur told FOX Sports. "It’s hand-to-hand combat."
The main objectives of the drill are teaching players to stay low and strike beneath an opponent's shoulder pads and building driving strength to move a defender backward on contact.
The Packers are 79–46–1 under LaFleur, including regular-season and playoff games. Green Bay is 1-3 in the playoffs since Jordan Love took over for future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.
Both Rodgers and Brett Favre won a Super Bowl with the Packers, so Love is under pressure to follow in their footsteps.
Love has turned into a solid QB under LaFleur, but the Packers aren't paying Love to be solid. They are paying him to be a superstar.
After all, Love signed a massive four-year, $220 million contract with Green Bay in 2024.
Love finished last season with 3,381 passing yards and 23 passing touchdowns while completing 66.3% of his passes. The Packers went 9-7-1 and lost to the Chicago Bears in the wild-card round of the 2025 NFL playoffs.
Love enters this season with 11,535 passing yards and 83 passing touchdowns. He's 27-20-1 as a starter.
The Packers open the 2026 season against the Minnesota Vikings. It's time for Love to play like an MVP, especially since Micah Parsons will miss the start of the campaign while recovering from his ACL tear.
Green Bay went 0-4 to finish the 2025 season and lost to the Chicago Bears in the wild-card round of the playoffs despite having a 21-6 lead.
If the Packers do miss the playoffs this season, we could see some major changes in Green Bay next offseason. This is a big year for Love and LaFleur.
