Facing a winless rival, Tennessee must exploit Houston’s struggling secondary and stifle the run to secure their first victory and ignite a potential season-saving turnaround.
The Tennessee Titans are carrying multiple losing streaks into Sunday's game with the Houston Texans.
The Titans are 0-4 entering Week 5. They have also lost the last three meetings with the Texans. The Titans are 1-3 against them, with their only win being a 32-27 victory at NRG Stadium in Houston in 2024 with Will Levis.
The Titans also only have 10 wins at home since the 2022 season.
Tennessee has an opportunity to start moving in the right direction this weekend. Houston is also 0-4 and comes into the game with its own problems.
The Titans will be without Amani Hooker. Carnell Tate had a back issue throughout the week but is playing. We may also see Joshua Williams get called up from the injured reserve.
He's been designated to return and has been out since the end of the preseason due to a pectoral injury.
With the Texans banged up and not playing like themselves, the Titans have a real chance to win. Houston's defense has been the calling card under DeMeco Ryans, but it hasn't been the same.
The Texans are allowing the third-most passing yards per game (277.6). Houston's running game is essentially non-existent as well. They average the third-fewest rushing yards per game (79).
This game could be the turning point for the season. Here's how I think the Titans can pull it off:
Make the Texans One-Dimensional
The Texans' running game hasn't been good, but the Titans don't need to do them any favors in that area.
Conversely, the Titans have allowed the ninth-most rushing yards per game (122.8) this season. The Titans have no business letting the Texans get right in the running game this Sunday.
Stopping the run and making the Texans pass should be a top priority.
Get After C.J. Stroud
Assuming the Titans can handle the running game, priority number two should be to put pressure on C.J. Stroud.
If the Titans can limit the Texans' ground game, getting to Stroud should be easier. Putting the Texans in obvious passing situations is a recipe for success. That way, the Titans can get after Stroud with the pass rush.
The Titans' pass rush has started to improve. Getting the Texans into long-yardage situations will make this easier for the Titans.
Continue Getting Tate the Ball
The Titans didn't win in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, but getting Tate going was a focal point of the game.
That should be the strategy again, not only because of how well Tate played, but also because of the Texans' struggles in the secondary.
Ryans' defense has usually been very reliable, but things have not been going well since he decided to stop handling play calling. Ryans is back to calling plays on defense, but that shouldn't change what the Titans do on offense.
Get the ball to Tate and take advantage of the porous pass defense so far. That doesn't mean they need to abandon the running game, but they need to have plays drawn up for Tate.
