Another Borussia Dortmund youth product departs the club as Cole Campbell moves to the Bundesliga’s newest members ahead of the new campaign
Will Borussia Dortmund End Up Triggering Cole Campbell's Buy-Back Clause In The Future?
Following on from a loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim last season, American forward Cole Campbell is set to move to newly promoted SV Elversberg ahead of their maiden voyage in Germany’s top flight of football.
Where and Who is SV Elversberg?
Located in far west Germany, next to the border that separates Germany and France, is a small town called Elverberg. With a population of just 13,000 residents, this small German area has, through hard work and years of climbing through the leagues, pushed their local football club SV Elversberg to new heights, with the peak of the mountain so far being their promotion to the Bundesliga in the campaign just gone, finishing runners-up to Dortmund rival Schalke 04.
SV Elverberg have had a meteoric rise through the German footballing pyramid, getting out of the 4th division in the 2021/22 season, before immediately securing promotion out of the 3rd division in the 2022/23 season.
Following on from that, SV Elverberg have steadily climbed their way up Bundesliga 2, making constant progression season upon season and following narrowly missing out on promotion in the 2024/25, the club parted ways with the manager that brought them all this way, Horst Steffen. They brought in former TSG Hoffenheim II coach Vincent Wagner, and he helped guide them to their glory last campaign.
Building For The Bundesliga and They Mean Business
Following their promotion to the Bundesliga, it would appear that they are trying everything that they can to stay here and keep the fairytale going. It has been reported by Florian Plettenberg that an agreement has been reached between Borussia Dortmund and SV Elversberg for the signing of Cole Campbell, which is a massive statement of intent from SV Elversberg
One of the main reasons for that was the calibre of clubs they had to beat to secure Cole Campbell’s signature, with SV Elversberg winning the race against dominant Scottish League side Celtic. This shows that the project that SV Elverberg must have presented to Cole Campbell was impressive enough to get him to choose them over the 56-time Scottish League champions, Celtic.
A Move that Works for All Parties
It was clear that Borussia Dortmund would not have been able to offer Cole Campbell the game time that he would have wanted, but also that he needed to push on and try to reach his full potential. This move guarantees game time for Cole Campbell, but Borussia Dortmund still have an element of control over the American forward's future.
That is because Dortmund have negotiated a buy-back clause into this transfer deal, meaning that should Cole Campbell excel at SV Elversberg, a club in which Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director Ole Book and his new Assistant Sporting Director David Blacha previously worked for and helped them on their journey to this point, then Borussia Dortmund have a set fee at which they can bring him back to the Signal Iduna Park.

I believe that this is a good move all around. For Borussia Dortmund, it's effectively a loan for them, as should Cole Campbell do well, they can bring him back for an already set fee. For SV Elversberg, it could prove to be a masterstroke in the transfer market this summer. They are getting in a player who is young, hungry and eager to prove why Borussia Dortmund brought him to the club aged 18.
And finally, for the player himself, this offers him a fantastic opportunity to make a name for himself and prove it in the top tier of German football, where he should get regular minutes, and should he impress enough at SV Elversberg, then a return to Borussia Dortmund could be on the cards.
