After having already been linked to an Argentinian this summer transfer window, Borussia Dortmund are once again looking to make moves in the South American Market.

Borussia Dortmund have been looking intensely at options from around the globe that they can bring in for good value, and that can add to Niko Kovac's squad following a couple of strong seasons for the Yellow Wall under his stewardship.
And one market the club has been looking into more than others is South America, particularly Argentina. Their latest target, following on from links to defensive midfielder Milton Delgado, comes in the form of attacking midfielder Giovanni Baroni.
Who Is Giovanni Baroni?
Born in Morteros, Argentina, the 17-year-old has risen through the CA Talleres academy and signed his first professional contract with the club back in February 2025.
Giovanni Baroni would then go on to make his professional debut for CA Telleres in January 2026, getting a debut assist in a win against Newell's Old Boys.
Then, following this debut, Giovanni Baroni established himself as a first-team regular for CA Telleres, who are managed by former Premier League Striker Carlos Tevez and owes his breakout to the Argentinian striker. Giovanni Baroni then went on to sign a contract extension until 2028 in March this year.
The attacking midfielder has also made five appearances for Argentina's U17 national team, contributing to three assists at a South American U17 tournament in April this year, showing that he is highly thought of within the national team set-up as well.

However, despite this contract extension, it has not stopped many clubs in Europe from monitoring his progress. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Giovanni Baroni is not only on the list for Borussia Dortmund but also being wanted by AC Fiorentina and Chelsea.
The report goes on to say, via Ruhr24, that while his market value is at €25 million, with a release clause also available at that price, a deal could be possible at roughly the €15 million mark, making this a really good deal on paper for anyone who manages to secure Giovanni Baroni's services.
Would This Be A Good Move For Borussia Dortmund?
The move looks like the sort of move Borussia Dortmund would look to make happen. Signing relatively unknown players and turning a monumental profit on them within a few years has long been the club's transfer strategy.
However, this summer it has already been reported that the club are looking to change direction when it comes to their transfer strategy, with the idea being that they want someone in the attacking third of the pitch who is ready to go immediately, and can match and quickly surpass the numbers of the recently departed Julian Brandt.
Therefore, if that is the aim that Borussia Dortmund are trying to achieve with any attacking signing, then Giovanni Baroni is unlikely to be that. To expect a 17-year-old to move to a completely new country and adjust to a new league immediately is not the sort of pressure and expectation normally placed upon a 17-year-old.
Author’s Verdict
This move, if Borussia Dortmund were to pursue it, would be a signing that has a really high ceiling but perhaps is not ready to be a starter week in, week out for the Yellow Wall.
So if the club were to sign Giovanni Baroni, I would imagine that it would be sensible to accompany that attacking signing with a more experienced player also coming into the attacking ranks at the club, meaning Niko Kovac could bed Giovanni Baroni in and only play him when he sees best for his team and Giovanni Baroni’s development.
