Ajax have agreed a deal to sign Simon Adingra on loan from Sunderland.
Ajax's search for a Mika Godts replacement has been ongoing for quite some time now, and Jordi Cruijff has held talks over signing several players in that position.
Initially, Ajax targeted a move to bring Noa Lang back to Amsterdam. Initial talks seemed to have been positive, but a move has failed to materialise, reportedly due to Napoli's asking price.
Brian Rodríguez from Club América is another player Ajax were very interested in, and they reportedly made an offer to sign the Uruguayan winger. Various reports, however, claim that Rodríguez will stay at the Mexican club. He was keen on a move to Ajax, but Club América reportedly convinced him to stay.
Ajax also very recently made an attempt to sign Borja Sainz from Porto. However, Matteo Moretto has reported that the Portuguese giants have rejected the offer from the Amsterdammers.
Keito Nakamura is another player Ajax are said to be considering. However, nothing seems to have advanced regarding Nakamura moving to Ajax at this stage, with Stade Reims reportedly wanting €15 million to part ways with the Japanese winger.
Ajax agree deal for Adingra
After failing with attempts to sign Lang, Rodríguez and Sainz, Ajax have now turned their attention to Sunderland winger Simon Adingra.
According to Keith Downie of Sky Sports, Ajax have agreed a deal to sign Adingra on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
Adingra is currently injured, but is expected to be back soon.
Is Adingra a good signing?
Last summer, Sunderland signed Adingra for a reported fee of £21.5 million from Brighton and Hove Albion. The winger endured a turbulent few months at the Stadium of Light, scoring only once in 15 appearances.
He moved to Monaco during the winter transfer window on loan, where he managed three goals and two assists in Ligue 1.
Michel Sanchez has publicly said that he wants a left winger who can make runs in behind, dominate in one-on-one situations and score goals.
Adingra is a high-volume dribbler. His success rate is not the best, but he does constantly try to go past his full-back. He is quite a creative player and is a very good crosser.
His goal-scoring record since moving to England is not the best, but he did score 14 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 season at Union St. Gilloise, and 10 the season before at FC Nordsjælland.
While he has struggled over the last 12 months, it was only one year ago that Sunderland paid a significant sum of money to sign him. If Ajax can get him back to his best, he could be a very good replacement for Godts.
