Ajax are in the market for two wingers this summer, and have held talks over a potential move for Leon Bailey.
Ajax want to sign two new wingers before the transfer window closes: a left winger to replace Mika Godts and also a right winger, as Michel is not happy with his current options in that position.
Ajax are working on a deal to sign Noa Lang from Napoli. The Amsterdammers are currently exploring a loan deal with an option to buy, with Galatasaray also strongly interested and looking at the same formula. Although Ajax want a loan deal, reports in Turkey claim that Napoli would be prepared to sell him for €15 million. Atalanta are also said to be interested, and have also looked at a loan deal for the Dutch winger.
Ajax have also been linked to Arnaut Danjuma and have reportedly explored a deal for the Valencia winger, but Lang is clearly the top target.
On the right wing, Ajax was interested in Roony Bardghji. It was expected that the Swedish winger would leave Barcelona this summer, but he suffered a serious injury in training and will be sidelined for a lengthy amount of time. Ajax are therefore no longer pursuing a transfer, but will have other options on their list.
Ajax explore deal for Bailey
Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey is now also under consideration at Ajax. The Jamaican spent the first half of last season on loan at AS Roma before returning to his parent club, Aston Villa, in January. He has typically operated on the right wing, but could play on the left wing at Ajax, should a transfer go through.
According to Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf, Leon Bailey has been offered to Ajax as a potential replacement for Mika Godts on the left wing. Ajax are facing strong competition from Galatasaray for Noa Lang, and the Turkish giants are considering making an offer to Napoli to sign the winger permanently.
Ajax are therefore now considering a move for the Bailey, but they have many options for the left wing position.
Bailey is open to a move to Ajax. Due to the fact that he only has one year left on his contract with Aston Villa, the Europa League winners would accept a transfer fee of around €9-10 million.
Bailey has been on Ajax's radar for a long time now. The report from De Telegraaf claims that Ajax tried to sign him in 2016 from Genk, but the transfer failed to materialise, and he later joined Bayer Leverkusen.
Bailey would be a good signing for the right wing
Bailey would be a good signing, but not as a replacement for Godts.
The former Leverkusen winger has spent most of his career playing on the right wing, and that is the position he should occupy if Ajax sign him.
To replace Godts, Ajax need to try to get a deal for Lang over the line. He is by far the best option on the market, and if he is indeed available for €15 million, it is a deal Ajax should look to do.
