Michel Sanchez has revealed his thoughts on Youri Baas' future.

Will Ajax win the Eredivisie this season?More Videos

Ajax have revamped their defensive line this summer, and there still may be more changes to come before the transfer window closes on 2 September.

The left-back position was identified as an area they felt needed to be strengthened, and Ajax have signed Caio Henrique from AS Monaco and Jofre Torrents from FC Barcelona in that position. Ajax also remain open to selling Owen Wijndal, but it is unclear whether there are any clubs actively working on a deal to sign the former AZ Alkmaar player.

The centre-back position has also been reinforced. Daley Blind also returned to Ajax for his third spell at the club, joining on a free transfer from Girona. Dies Janse has also returned to Ajax following a successful loan spell at FC Groningen last season.

Several centre-backs have also departed the club this summer. Ahmetcan Kaplan has joined NEC Nijmegen on a permanent transfer after spending the 2025/26 season on loan at the Goffertstadion. Josip Sutalo has also departed and joined Lazio on loan. The Serie A club also have the option to buy the Croatian defender permanently next summer. Ko Itakura also returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach after a disappointing season in Amsterdam.

Ajax remain in the market for a new right-footed centre-back, but the club are currently prioritising the signings of a left winger and a defensive midfielder.

Ajax have also looked at signing a right-back, but it is not expected that Ajax will strengthen that position, with Anton Gaaei set to stay, despite interest from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the window.

Michel wants Baas to stay

Youri Baas has also been linked with a move away from Ajax. Reports claim that the Amsterdammers would be ready to listen to offers for the centre-back, as the club sees more long-term potential in Janse.

Baas is said to be on Eintracht Frankfurt's shortlist, with the Bundesliga club looking to strengthen their defence.

Despite this, though, Michel Sanchez has made it clear that he wants Baas to stay at Ajax.

"In football, there is no one hundred per cent certainty, but he is a very important player," Michel explained in his press conference after Ajax's 5-3 win vs FC Sion.

"He stands for what Ajax stands for; it is very important that he stays here. For me, it is simply not an option."

Could selling Baas be beneficial?

If Ajax believe Janse is ready and good enough to play a big role this season, Baas' departure could be beneficial for both parties.

Ajax could then use the transfer fee to sign a new right-footed centre-back to provide competition for Aaron Bouwman, and potentially also use some of the money to sign a new defensive midfielder or left winger.

That being said, Baas was one of Ajax's best players last season and selling him would be a risk. Janse was excellent at Groningen, but playing for Ajax comes with a lot more pressure, and he may not yet be ready to start regularly for a team that wants to win the Eredivisie.

It will certainly be intriguing to see whether Frankfurt, or a different club, try to sign Baas in the coming days, and how open Ajax would be to a sale.
