Silenced doubters and a shock national team return define a whirlwind week for the PSV midfielder, whose form proves indispensable despite persistent scrutiny from fans.
Guus Til has continued to divide opinion among PSV supporters, but the midfielder’s performances have once again given Peter Bosz reason to defend his importance to the team.
Til has remained a regular contributor for PSV and added another two goals to his season tally during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to FC Twente. Despite PSV ultimately losing in Enschede, the midfielder once again made his mark in an important match.
The criticism surrounding Til had also extended to the national team. After being overlooked by new Netherlands head coach Xavi for the previous squad, there was frustration within PSV circles that the midfielder had not even received a call explaining the decision.
Bosz addressed the situation before PSV’s trip to Enschede and made his position clear.
The PSV head coach said he found it difficult to understand that Til had received no personal call from Xavi or one of his assistants to explain why he had been left out of the Netherlands squad.
That situation has now changed.
Til was eventually included in the latest Netherlands squad after Justin Kluivert was asked to withdraw, giving the PSV midfielder another opportunity to establish himself at the international level.
Til’s Importance To PSV
Til joined PSV in 2022 and has gradually become an important part of Bosz’s squad. His versatility has been particularly valuable, with the midfielder increasingly being used in an advanced role.
Last season, Til was regularly deployed as an occasional striker, a role that helped revive his international prospects. Former Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman subsequently selected him for the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The arrival of Xavi initially appeared to put those international hopes on hold. As relayed by PSV Inside, his omission from the first squad under the new coach represented a setback, particularly after his consistent contribution for PSV.
His latest call-up, however, provides a fresh opportunity.
Til’s value to PSV has also been evident during the current campaign. Bosz has repeatedly relied on his movement, work rate and ability to arrive in dangerous positions from midfield.
Even when PSV have struggled to maintain control of matches, Til has remained capable of influencing the game. His brace against Twente was another example, although PSV eventually surrendered their lead and lost 3-2.
A Happier Period Away From Football
Til also received positive personal news last week.
His girlfriend, Britt Stefels, announced on Instagram that the couple are expecting their first child. The pair have been together since 2019 but generally keep their private lives away from social media.
Stefels later shared a video with the caption, “Definitely the biggest project so far”, accompanied by a baby emoji.
Her sister is also expecting a child, meaning the two sisters are entering pregnancy at the same time.
For Til, it comes during a period in which his football career has once again taken a positive turn. After the disappointment of missing Xavi’s first Netherlands selection, the midfielder now has the chance to make his case on the international stage once more.
And while questions about his place in the PSV team continue among some supporters, his latest performances have ensured that Til remains firmly part of Bosz’s plans.
