Sam Lammers returns to his boyhood club to bolster a thin attacking line, finalising a cut-price move after a resurgent spell revitalised his career in the Eredivisie.
PSV are on the verge of bringing Sam Lammers back to Eindhoven, with the striker undergoing his medical examination after the club reached an agreement with FC Twente.
PSV have agreed a deal with FC Twente for the permanent return of Sam Lammers, bringing an end to more than a week of negotiations over the striker.
Lammers is undergoing his medical examination at PSV, with the final formalities now standing between the 29-year-old and his return to the club where he began his professional career.
According to PSV watcher Rik Elfrink of the Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV will pay approximately €2 million to FC Twente for Lammers.
There is also a financial twist to the deal. Under solidarity rules, PSV are entitled to just over four per cent of Lammers' transfer fee, which amounts to roughly €80,000 being deducted from the overall cost. Willem II are also set to receive around €5,000.
Lammers Fills Important PSV Need
Lammers arrives at a time when PSV need additional depth in the striker position.
With Alassane Pléa no longer in the picture, Ricardo Pepi is currently the club's only recognised out-and-out striker. Guus Til can also operate through the middle, as he did at times last season, although that role previously involved Ismael Saibari, who has since moved to Bayern Munich.
PSV, therefore, see Lammers as a player capable of providing another option at the top of the attack.
The Eindhoven club particularly values his technical qualities and his ability to find solutions in tight spaces, where his movement and combination play can help unlock compact defences.
A Remarkable Return to Eindhoven
Lammers' return also marks an unusual chapter in his career.
The striker left PSV in 2020 after what the club described at the time as essentially a verbal agreement over a new contract. Instead, he moved to Atalanta Bergamo for €10 million, including €1 million in bonuses.
His spell in Italy failed to develop as hoped, while his subsequent time at Rangers also proved difficult.
After returning to the Netherlands, however, Lammers rebuilt his reputation. He moved from FC Utrecht to FC Twente and subsequently became an important attacking option in Enschede.
The arrival of Wout Weghorst at Twente changed his prospects for regular playing time and opened the door for a return to Eindhoven.
Now, with his medical underway, PSV are close to completing a permanent reunion with ‘Samba Sam’ as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of a demanding season.
