Following a defensive collapse in Enschede, Peter Bosz demands tactical maturity and sharper focus as the Dutch leaders navigate a relentless schedule of two matches per week.

PSV head coach Peter Bosz has identified consistency as the biggest issue facing his side after their recent defeat to FC Twente, while insisting he remains confident in the squad ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.

Speaking to PSV Watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, Bosz admitted that PSV have struggled to maintain control during matches, despite showing periods of high-quality football.

“Well, we lack consistency. That’s the main issue. We aren't stable,” Bosz said.

The PSV coach pointed to the team's second goal against FC Twente as evidence of what his side are capable of producing. The move was built from the back and finished after a composed attacking sequence.

“Take our second goal against FC Twente, a fantastic attack built up from the back. At times, we’re very composed on the ball. Then, we lose possession just once. Suddenly, the stadium in Enschede comes alive again, and we get pushed back.”

For Bosz, the solution is not simply about responding to pressure once it arrives. PSV must control matches through their possession and anticipate situations before they become problems.

“That shouldn't happen. If we move the ball well, the crowd goes quiet there, too,” he explained.

He was particularly critical of the circumstances surrounding Twente’s final goal, which came after PSV had taken a free kick.

“Things went completely wrong with the last goal we conceded. That sort of thing should never happen, especially when we’re taking a free kick ourselves. It has nothing to do with organization; it’s simply poor play. We need to anticipate situations rather than just react to them.”

Bosz Confident Despite Gruelling Schedule

PSV now face a demanding period, with two matches a week expected between now and the next international break.

Despite the workload, Bosz remains confident in his squad and believes that depth and commitment can carry the team through the schedule.

“Between now and the next international break, we’re basically facing a non-stop schedule of two matches a week. Still, I’m confident,” he said.

Bosz recalled having doubts earlier in the campaign, particularly after a pre-season meeting with Villarreal when PSV's defensive structure came under pressure.

“We played against Villarreal and our defense was full of holes, one mistake after another.”

However, he believes the squad has since demonstrated enough quality to justify his confidence.

PSV Must Tighten Up Defensively

PSV's defensive performance against Twente remains a concern, with Bosz acknowledging that conceding three goals was unacceptable.

“We defended poorly against FC Twente. Conceding three goals is too many. That’s clear.”

Yet Bosz also pointed to PSV's earlier defensive record, noting that before the Twente match they had conceded the fewest chances in the league.

The manager's belief is that PSV's attacking output can ultimately determine their title challenge.

“If we score a hundred goals or more again, I think we’ll become champions. That’s almost always the case. We have plenty of goal-scoring ability in the squad.”

Bosz expects contributions from across the team, including Noah Fernandez and Paul Wanner. He also outlined clear expectations for midfielders.

“I also expect a decent number of goals from Noah Fernandez and Paul Wanner. We need about seven or eight goals from the ‘number eight’ position in midfield, and our ‘number ten’ should be scoring around fifteen.”

Bosz Acknowledges Growing Competition

The PSV manager also assessed the wider title race, with Ajax, Feyenoord, FC Twente and AZ all featuring in the early-season picture.

Bosz believes Ajax have strengthened significantly, particularly by adding experience, while Feyenoord have handled the loss of goals following the transfer window reasonably well.

“Ajax has strengthened significantly and prioritized experience,” he said.

“Feyenoord has coped well with the loss of goals following the transfer window; they’re certainly scoring plenty.”

Bosz believes stability will ultimately prove crucial for all the leading clubs.

“Ultimately, top clubs need to be stable, and that is something we all still have to prove this season.”

With the winter break still ahead, Bosz expects the picture to become clearer, while acknowledging that Twente and AZ remain firmly in contention.

“Right now, Twente and AZ are also in the mix, even though they lack the experience the other clubs possess.”
