The PSV winger is enjoying an impressive season after returning from injury, but insists he still has plenty of room for improvement as Peter Bosz's side look to build momentum in the Eredivisie title race.
Ruben van Bommel has enjoyed a significant rise at PSV Eindhoven this season, establishing himself as a regular starter, earning his first Netherlands international cap and strengthening his reputation as one of the Eredivisie's most exciting attacking players.
Yet, despite his growing influence under Peter Bosz, the 22-year-old believes he has not reached the level he expects of himself.
Van Bommel was among the goalscorers as PSV demolished Willem II 7-0 on Saturday evening. The result provided another boost for the Eindhoven side, with seven different players finding the net in a commanding team performance.
Speaking to journalists after the match, the winger expressed his satisfaction with the collective display but made clear that he expects more from his own contribution.
“Seven different players scoring goals? That makes for a very good evening for us as a team. It's a great feeling for everyone,” Van Bommel said, as quoted by Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad.
However, he was less satisfied when discussing his personal scoring record. Having scored his third goal of the campaign, the forward believes his numbers should be better.
“In that regard, I demand more from myself. Three goals at this stage isn't enough, though we have plenty of other guys who are scoring. I'd be happy if every week went just like tonight.”
Van Bommel has deliberately avoided setting himself a specific target for the season, preferring to focus on scoring as frequently as possible. He also acknowledged that he could have made a greater impact during PSV's recent meeting with Feyenoord.
“I could say I want to score a certain number of goals, but the truth is I just want to score as many as I possibly can. That's it. If you look at the match against Feyenoord, I really should have put at least one away.”

PSV's emphatic victory over Willem II came after Feyenoord dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Fortuna Sittard. Peter Bosz informed his players about the result before kick-off, although he later admitted he had considered whether the information might distract them.
Van Bommel confirmed that the squad were aware of the situation and understood the importance of making the most of the opportunity.
“We were aware that Feyenoord had dropped points. The coach mentioned it briefly. In moments like that, you have to be extra sharp as a group, which is something we touched upon among ourselves,” he explained.
The winger stressed that PSV must concentrate on their own performances rather than becoming preoccupied with their rivals.
“It's crucial that we win in a situation like this, as it allowed us to take another positive step forward. But we're not there yet.”

Despite the seven-goal victory, Van Bommel believes PSV must reproduce that level of performance far more consistently if they are to finish the season as champions.
The forward wants the team to build a sustained winning run and put themselves in a strong position before the winter break.
“What we did tonight is something we need to show every single week. We have to do this much more often,” he said. “It's important to put together a winning streak now, so that we're in a strong position by the winter break.”
Van Bommel has also been linked with a potential move away from Eindhoven, with Bosz recently suggesting that the winger has the qualities to become PSV's record sale.
However, the player is keeping his attention on his development rather than speculation about his future.
“I just need to perform every week. That's what I have to do,” he said.
He added that there are still several aspects of his game he wants to improve, including his positioning and the situations he creates when receiving possession.
For Van Bommel, the 7-0 victory was an important collective achievement, but the personal standards remain higher. His message is clear: PSV must deliver performances like this more regularly, and he expects himself to play an increasingly important role in making that happen.
