The veteran journalist slams the underwhelming Eredivisie showdown, claiming both title rivals lacked the depth and intensity to justify their hyped Champions League billing after a frustrating stalemate.
Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has criticised the quality of PSV and Feyenoord’s 1-1 draw, arguing that the Eredivisie title contenders fell short of the Champions League standard promised before their meeting at the Philips Stadion.
Peter Bosz’s PSV enjoyed an excellent first half and took the lead through Guus Til, but they failed to build on their advantage. Anis Hadj Moussa equalised after the break, leaving the hosts frustrated and Feyenoord four points clear at the top of the table.
Writing in his column for De Telegraaf, Driessen was unimpressed by the overall quality of the contest, despite acknowledging several players who produced moments of individual brilliance.

Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst had described the fixture as a match of Champions League quality ahead of kick-off. Driessen, however, felt the performance of both teams failed to justify that billing.
“But in the head-to-head match-up, that level was too much to ask of PSV and Feyenoord. Especially in terms of squad quality, intensity and tempo,” the journalist wrote.
“Simply put, both teams lacked too much quality in depth.”
Although there were flashes of technical quality, neither side consistently imposed its style on the other. PSV controlled much of the first half, while Feyenoord improved after the interval, but the match never developed into the high-intensity contest many had anticipated.
Driessen nevertheless highlighted a number of players who demonstrated their ability during the game.
“Of course, Anis Hadj Moussa, Ivan Perisic, Ruben van Bommel, Gjivai Zechiël, Givairo Read, Lutsharel Geertruida, Guus Til, Luciano Valente and Sergiño Dest showcased their individual quality in flashes,” he wrote, as quoted by PSV Inside.
“In terms of team performance, it was mediocre and boring, because the top match failed to ignite and both teams were powerless to impose their will on the other.”

Driessen also turned his attention to PSV’s position in the title race and the challenges facing Bosz in the coming weeks.
The Eindhoven club have been affected by injuries, including the absence of Jerdy Schouten, while Ismael Saibari and Joey Veerman have departed for Germany, further reducing the options available to the manager.
With PSV trailing Feyenoord by four points, Driessen believes it is essential that the defending champions remain within reach before the winter transfer window provides an opportunity to strengthen the squad.
“For PSV it is important to avoid as much damage as possible in this first half of the competition so that after repair work on the winter transfer market the hunt for the fourth league title can be opened,” he wrote.
The draw means PSV missed an opportunity to close the gap on their title rivals, although the season remains far from decided.
Bosz made changes in an attempt to find a winning goal [IMAGO/ANP]Substitutions Reveal Contrasting Ambitions
Driessen reserved further criticism for the tactical decisions made by both managers, particularly their approaches during the closing stages.
Bosz made changes in an attempt to find a winning goal, while Van Bronckhorst introduced Tobias van den Elshout and Thijs Kraaijeveld. Driessen interpreted Feyenoord’s substitutions as a sign that the visitors were content to protect their position at the top of the table.
“With these substitutes, Van Bronckhorst indirectly made it clear that he was satisfied with a point and the status quo of Eredivisie leaders, with four points more than champions PSV,” he wrote.
“While Bosz made changes to win, Van Bronckhorst kept potential goals on the bench.”
The contrasting approaches reflected the different circumstances facing the two sides. PSV were seeking a victory to reduce the deficit, while Feyenoord left Eindhoven with their four-point advantage intact.
For Driessen, however, the broader concern was the standard of the contest itself. Despite the individual quality on display, neither side produced a sustained team performance worthy of the Champions League comparison made before kick-off.
