As Xavi Hernandez prioritizes Eredivisie talent for the national team, Ruben van Bommel returns to PSV eager to justify his debut and spark a crucial domestic rebound.
Club football returns after the international break, with PSV hosting sc Heerenveen at the Philips Stadion on Friday evening.
Peter Bosz’s side will be looking to respond after their 3-2 defeat away to FC Twente before the break. Among those returning to Eindhoven is Ruben van Bommel, who made his senior Netherlands debut during Xavi Hernandez’s latest international selection.
The PSV winger’s rapid rise has caught the attention of De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen, who believes Xavi’s willingness to look towards Eredivisie talent has provided an unexpected boost for the Dutch competition.
Driessen Praises Xavi’s Eredivisie Focus
Driessen highlighted the growing presence of domestically based players in the Netherlands squad in his column for De Telegraaf.
“Thanks to national coach Xavi Hernandez, the Eredivisie has unexpectedly received a boost during the past international break,” Driessen wrote, as quoted by PSV Inside.
He pointed to the upcoming meeting between Feyenoord and AZ as another example, with Gjivai Zechiël and Mexx Meerdink both receiving their first Netherlands call-ups.
“To broaden the added value of Xavi for the Eredivisie: tonight at PSV-SC Heerenveen, with Ruben van Bommel yet another third Oranje debutant will be in the starting lineup,” Driessen added.
Van Bommel is expected to feature for PSV after earning his first international cap, while the Eindhoven side also have two more experienced Netherlands internationals in Lutsharel Geertruida and Guus Til.
For Driessen, Xavi’s recognition of players performing in the Eredivisie is significant.
“He is flanked in Eindhoven by the internationals Lutsharel Geertruida and Guus Til. That Xavi has an eye for the three Eredivisie talents and two experienced PSV players is a good thing for the Dutch competition,” he said.
Driessen Urges Caution Over New Oranje Status
While Driessen welcomes the attention on Eredivisie players, he also believes their international status must be judged carefully.
The first experiences with the Netherlands did not produce convincing results. Meerdink and Van Bommel both came off the bench against Germany before starting against Greece, with both matches ending in draws.
Driessen therefore believes the new internationals still have plenty to prove at club level.
“The results during their first acquaintance with Oranje turned out disappointing,” he noted.
“Some caution is therefore in order. Let Zechiël and Meerdink first prove their new status in Feyenoord-AZ, and Van Bommel in PSV-Heerenveen.”
For Van Bommel, Friday’s meeting with Heerenveen offers an immediate opportunity to respond after his first taste of international football and demonstrate why Xavi handed him his Netherlands debut.
PSV, meanwhile, will be seeking a winning return to domestic action as they attempt to put the Twente defeat behind them.
