Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 World Cup after suffering an ankle ligament injury against Ivory Coast.

The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is expected to be sidelined for several months, dealing a significant blow to Julian Nagelsmann's squad.

The 26-year-old centre-back sustained the injury during Germany's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday and was unable to continue beyond half-time, with Antonio Rüdiger replacing him for the second period.

A statement from the Germany national team confirmed that Schlotterbeck had suffered damage to the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle and is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Schlotterbeck has suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle," the statement said, as quoted by a report from BBC Sport.

The German Football Association added that the Borussia Dortmund defender "will be out for several months" but will remain with the squad in the United States for now despite being unable to play any further part in the competition.

The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for both player and country. Schlotterbeck had made an impressive start to the tournament, playing the full 90 minutes in Germany's opening 7-1 victory over Curacao and scoring his side's second goal in a commanding performance.

His influence extended beyond defensive duties, with his progressive passing and ability to build attacks from deep becoming a key feature of Julian Nagelsmann's system.

Germany head coach Nagelsmann admitted the injury was a bitter disappointment for both the player and the squad.

"Schlotti will be greatly missed on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially his excellent build-up play," Nagelsmann said.

"It could have been his World Cup. Yesterday, we all tried to lift his spirits – fortunately, he is a very positive character who is already looking ahead again."

Nagelsmann also highlighted the importance of Schlotterbeck's presence around the squad despite his inability to contribute on the field.

"It is a very positive sign that he will initially remain here within the team, because he also has an influence off the pitch."

Germany have already secured top spot in Group E and guaranteed their progression to the Round of 32 ahead of their final group-stage fixture against Ecuador. However, tournament regulations mean Nagelsmann cannot call up a replacement now that the competition is underway.

The loss leaves Germany with four recognised centre-back options for the rest of the tournament. Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger are expected to form the first-choice partnership, while Waldemar Anton and Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw provide additional cover.

Schlotterbeck's absence could also have tactical implications. As Germany's only naturally left-footed central defender in the starting lineup, his passing range and ability to initiate attacks from the back offered balance to Nagelsmann's defensive structure.

The injury also interrupts what had been a highly positive year for the Dortmund defender. Earlier this year, speculation linked him with several major European clubs before he committed his future to Borussia Dortmund by signing a contract extension through to 2031.
