Real Madrid have appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager, but it could have been Mikel Arteta.

Real Madrid's managerial situation has been a problem for them in recent years. Carlo Ancelotti got two Champions League wins out of a squad that was probably never at that level, at least in terms of their depth. And the Italian was unfairly criticised when things did not go his way.

Xabi Alonso, one of the top young managers in the world, was brought in to replace him. It was viewed as a long-term appointment. The Spaniard lasted half the season before being shown the exit door.

Speculation suggested that it was an ability to deal with the dressing room that led to his exit, not necessarily the results.

Alvaro Arbeloa was handed the reins until the end of the season and that is how long it lasted before he was shown the exit door.

Now, Florentino Perez has gone back to the tried-and-tested. Jose Mourinho has returned. Perhaps somewhat of a surprise to many fans, considering the manner in which his first reign ended more than a decade ago.

It could have so easily have been a different manager if Perez had not been re-elected as the president of the club.

In an exclusive from Arsenal Roundtable, insider Hand of Arsenal said that Enrique Riquelme explored the possibility of bringing Mikel Arteta to Real Madrid had he won a presidential election.

Arteta is considered by many as the best manager in world football, now that Pep Guardiola seems to be taking a break from coaching.

Arteta does have a past with FC Barcelona, as he was part of La Masia but never manage to establish himself at the club's senior level.

He would go on to spend the majority of his playing career in England, playing for Arsenal and Everton. He did have a brief spell in Spain with Real Sociedad.

Someone like Arteta would have been an excellent long-term appointment. He has proven that he can pull off a project at Arsenal.

For a decade-and-a-half, Arsenal had not even been genuine contenders in England or Europe. Arteta has come in and built one of the strongest teams in the world.

They won the Premier League in the 25/26 season and were a penalty shootout away from winning the Champions League as well, and going down as the greatest Arsenal team in history.

A move for Arteta does not seem to be on the table for the foreseeable future though. Real Madrid are clearly ready to back Mourinho.

The summer signings this summer have sent a clear statement. Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries are expected to don the Royal White jersey from next season.

It might not be the end of it either. It is believed that Real Madrid will look to make three more signings in this window, as big names like Enzo Fernandez, Nico Schlotterbeck and more are being linked.
