Bournemouth's signing of Álvaro Rodríguez has generated plenty of excitement, but what can supporters expect? Back of the Net spoke to Uruguayan football expert David from Warriors of Uruguay, who explains why the former Real Madrid striker has all the tools to become a Premier League hero.
AFC Bournemouth's latest recruitment drive has once again taken them to one of Europe's elite talent pools, with the Cherries securing the signing of former Real Madrid academy striker Álvaro Rodríguez.
Announced on Tuesday by afcb.co.uk, the 22-year-old Uruguayan arrives on the south coast after helping Elche retain their La Liga status, but while many Bournemouth supporters will know little about the towering forward, those who have followed his development believe the club may have unearthed another player capable of flourishing under the Black Knight model.
Speaking to Back of the Net - The AFC Bournemouth Fan Channel, David from Warriors of Uruguay described Rodríguez as "a pure number nine" and believes his ceiling is significantly higher than his recent goalscoring numbers suggest.
"He's a reference point, someone that can hold up the play, bring others into play and ideally be the finisher."
Despite scoring seven league goals for Elche last season, David believes Bournemouth's recruitment team will have looked beyond the raw statistics.
"Scouting nowadays is more about looking at the underlying data. Bournemouth is a great example of a club that does it really well. Even though he scored seven goals last season, he's someone who could go on to be a 15, 20, maybe even 25-goal-a-season striker."
Rodríguez's route to the Premier League has not been straightforward. Having progressed through Real Madrid's famed La Fábrica academy, he famously scored in a Madrid derby during his brief first-team opportunities under Carlo Ancelotti before loan spells at Getafe and Elche provided valuable senior experience.
According to David, those difficult periods may ultimately prove beneficial.
"Not getting the opportunities and having tough games at clubs fighting near the bottom of La Liga was a learning experience for him."
While Bournemouth supporters will naturally compare the Uruguayan to current striker Evanilson, Rodríguez appears to offer a different profile altogether.
Standing at 6ft 4in, he provides an aerial threat while also possessing impressive technical ability.
"He's good in the air, but he's also shown a real variety of finishes. He can score headers, smart finishes inside the box, and goals from outside the area as well."
David also highlighted the striker's relentless work ethic, something likely to appeal to Marco Rose.
"As a fan you'll love him because he's big, he gets into challenges, he works his socks off. He's really someone you would love being in your team."
However, he believes there is still room for improvement before Rodríguez reaches his full potential.
"His finishing can improve, particularly his composure in front of goal. He also needs to stay calmer and wait for opportunities rather than drifting away looking for the ball."
Even so, David has little doubt the Premier League is the right stage for the young striker.
"I think he has the physical makeup and the character to adapt. He's still only 22 and I think he'll be able to grow into the Premier League."
Rodríguez also finds himself entering an exciting period for Uruguay. With Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani no longer leading the line and Darwin Núñez yet to cement the role, David believes Bournemouth's new signing has a genuine opportunity on the international stage.
"The number nine spot is up for grabs and I think he's the most talented of that group."
As Bournemouth prepare for a historic campaign that includes European football, Rodríguez may not immediately become first-choice striker, but patience could prove crucial.
"This first season doesn't have to be 15 or 20 goals because that's so difficult. Show some moments, show you're up for it, and have a season you can build on to develop into a really good Premier League striker."
If Bournemouth's recent recruitment record is anything to go by, supporters may have every reason to believe Álvaro Rodríguez could become the club's next success story.
