Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool target Yan Diomande, completing a deal that brings one of Europe’s most highly rated young wingers to the Bernabéu.
The 19‑year‑old had been weighing up his options for the next step in his career, with interest from Liverpool and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, before Real Madrid’s late intervention secured the agreement.
With Liverpool pushing hardest for his signature and presenting a clear pathway into their long term plans, the club appeared well placed to win the race before Diomande’s stance shifted.
Liverpool Talks Before Decision Shift
Liverpool were initially seen as Diomande’s most likely destination, with the chance to eventually succeed Mohamed Salah understood to appeal to the winger.
His discussions with Andoni Iraola gave the club a genuine opportunity to move ahead in the race, but after those talks, Diomande reportedly felt Liverpool were preparing for a transition season.
That concern led him to reconsider his options and look elsewhere, according to The Athletic.
Real Madrid’s Late Move Proves Decisive
Paris Saint‑Germain also tried to sign Diomande and were confident after reportedly agreeing personal terms, but they were unable to meet Leipzig’s valuation.
That allowed Real Madrid to step in, returning with an improved proposal after seeing an initial bid rejected.
Their decisive offer, a package that ultimately came to £120m, met RB Leipzig’s demands and secured the winger, who will now join a forward line featuring Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham as Madrid continue assembling one of Europe’s most formidable attacking units.
Liverpool Exploring Alternative Attacking Options
Liverpool have already moved on to other attacking options, with Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye emerging as two targets to strengthen the forward line.
Barcola’s ability to operate across both wings makes him an ideal profile for Iraola’s system, while Mbaye is viewed as a high ceiling talent.
The Reds are expected to remain active in the market and there is confidence that suitable alternatives to Diomande can still be secured before the window closes.
Authors Verdict
Although Diomande turned down Liverpool amid concerns this season could be a transitional one, there is still every reason to believe the club can enjoy real success under Andoni Iraola. Liverpool remain active in the market and are strongly linked with Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, two players who would significantly strengthen the attacking options if deals can be completed.
Missing out on Diomande is a setback, but Liverpool have alternative targets capable of pushing the team forward this year. A new manager does not automatically mean a transitional season, look at Arne Slot’s first season.
With the right recruitment and a clear structure, Liverpool have the quality to compete immediately and build momentum rather than reset.
