Manchester United have been heavily linked with several left-wingers this summer, as Michael Carrick looks to prepare his squad for a return to the Champions League, but Marcus Rashford could yet return to Old Trafford.
Rashford spent the season with Barcelona, scoring 14 goals and registering 14 assists, but Hansi Flick's side chose not to activate their £26 million buy option. Anthony Gordon has since made the move to Barcelona from Newcastle United.
It has been reported that Rashford has a £40 million buy clause, which could see him leave United this summer, although that fee is not available to Liverpool or Manchester City.
Bayern Munich have been named as an option, but other Premier League sides have also been linked to the England international, who scored in their World Cup opener against Croatia.
Ferdinand urges United to block Rashford sale
It has not been reported if United are set on selling Rashford this summer, although it has been said that if he is still at the club, he is expected to join up with Michael Carrick's pre-season squad after his post-World Cup break.
Rio Ferdinand is one of many who have asked United to reconsider selling Rashford this summer.
On his YouTube channel, he said: "Do you know what, Manchester United might have to start re-evaluating Marcus Rashford’s situation."
Speaking on Rashford's time at Barcelona, the former United centre-back continued: "It seems like Marcus Rashford has matured, the time away from the club may have done him the good he needed and maybe it’s cleansed both parties.
"Is it time? Is it time to shake hands and for him to say, 'I’m back'? I think you can see a maturity with Marcus Rashford now."
If he returned to Old Trafford, Rashford could force Patrick Dorgu back to left-back, meaning he would be competing for minutes on the left flank with Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian netted 10 goals for United in his debut campaign.
Rashford could be a money saver
United are eyeing several left-wingers this summer, who are all expected to cost north of £60 million - a large fee when the Red Devils have to rebuild their midfield, too.
Michael Carrick's side are expected to make at least two midfield signings this summer, including Atalanta's Éderson, who should move to Old Trafford once the World Cup is over.
Roundtable understands that club-to-club talks have begun regarding Mateus Fernandes, who could be the second midfielder to join this summer. Many would argue that a more defensive option should be added, so a lot of money will be spent this summer.
Therefore, saving £60 million by allowing Rashford to reintegrate into the squad would free up funds to sign a more high-profile midfielder, or a left-back, or even a central defender.
