Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has announced himself at the World Cup for the Netherlands.
If Brian Brobbey continues his outstanding form on the World stage, then Sunderland supporters would be forgiven for fearing that one of Europe’s elite will be eyeing a move for the Netherlands frontman this summer.
At the weekend, on his first World Cup start, Brobbey announced himself on the World stage with his 17-minute brace for Holland in their 5-1 win over Sweden.
Brobbey led the line for The Orange in typically robust fashion, and showed exactly why he has cemented himself as one of the hardest centre-forwards to contend with in the Premier League since his £21m move to Sunderland last summer.
Following his dynamic display, Liverpool and Netherlands stalwart Virgil van Dijk publicly praised Brobbey for his emphatic style of play, which saw the bruising frontman end his debut season in the Premier League as Sunderland’s top goalscorer.
In the post-season global tournament, the ex-Ajax man has taken that rich vein of form into the World Cup, with him currently the joint-top goalscorer for the Netherlands following his first-half double against Graham Potter’s side.
Inevitably, his form will see suitors across Europe’s top five leagues keeping tabs on the 24-year-old, who is tied down at Sunderland until 2030 after he penned a long-term deal at the Stadium of Light just last year.
Despite his eye-catching form over the last year, as he continues his career resurgence in the wake of a difficult final campaign with the Eredivisie giants, Sunderland fans should not be worried over a prospective Brobbey exit amid speculative reports indicating so this week.
Thankfully for the red-and-white faithful, Dutch football expert Michael Statham has assured the Sunderland supporters that Brobbey’s performance is a positive for Regis Le Bris’ side, and that he would be “surprised” to see Brobbey depart Wearside for a prospective elite European suitor this summer.
Statham told BBC Sport: "I don't know about any sort of plans for him in the transfer window this summer.
"I'll be surprised if he leaves after one year with Sunderland.
"I think it's only a good thing. Why not? Sunderland fans should definitely be celebrating the success of Brobbey.
"I think it's only a good thing. He will only get better from this. This guy is still quite a young striker, so yes, this will only be a growth for him."
Brian Brobbey Will Want More Goals at World Cup
Social media was awash with acclaim for Brobbey following his dominant performance on Saturday evening, with his throwback, bullish style winning the hearts of football supporters on the World stage.
However, Sunderland fans are no strangers to the brilliance of Brobbey after his debut campaign on Wearside, in which he scored seven goals and etched his name into Black Cats folklore forever by scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 comeback victory away at bitter regional rivals Newcastle United.
The Black Cats fans back on Wearside and worldwide will be inevitably cheering the Sunderland number nine on yet again on Friday evening as Ronald Koeman’s side take on Tunisia in their final Group F showdown as they seek to end the group stage at the top of their table.
Netherlands will be hoping for another three points, and Brobbey will certainly be in contention to add to his two-goal tally in his debut World Cup tournament.
