Celtic have agreed the deal almost out of nowhere, as it was not expected at this point in time.
Celtic finally seem to be getting stuff done when it comes to strengthening their squad. Over the past couple of days, reports have emerged suggesting talks with a fair few players.
It remains to be seen if Celtic can get those deals over the line and bring in some fresh faces to Parkhead.
Of course, it is not just about signing new players. The club would do well to keep hold of some of their best in the current roster as well.
Kelechi Iheanacho is someone that the majority of the support want to see back next season. But somewhat surprisingly, it is one of his teammates, with far less impact last season, who has agreed to a new deal before the Nigerian striker.
Celtic agree one-year deal
According to Anthony Joseph, Celtic have agreed a one-year deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain. He was weighing up options at a number of clubs in Europe this summer but Martin O’Neill has convinced him to stay.
That is a little surprising. O'Neill did not play him a ton towards the end of the season. But it appears he saw enough to be keen to keep him around.
To be very honest, most fans had been waiting for the club to sign Iheanacho to a new deal. Instead, it is Oxlade-Chamberlain who has extended his stay at Parkhead.
That will give the supporters hope though that an agreement with Iheanacho is around the corner as well. He most certainly was a bigger part of the club's double triumph with his excellent performances off the bench.
As for Oxalde-Chamberlain, many had expected his stint to end after what had been somewhat of an underwhelming spell. Hopefully, a pre-season with O'Neill helps him discover his best in Celtic colours next season.
Kelechi Iheanacho needs to be next
There is a good chance that Daizen Maeda will leave Celtic this summer. He seemed to hint at that after Japan's World Cup exit.
That would make it even more important for Celtic to go out and agree an extension with Iheanacho.
The club did allow the automatic option for that to run out. That suggests that either they don't want to continue with Iheanacho, or they want to bring him back on reduced terms.
The latter does make some sense considering the little football Iheanacho played last season, spending a lot of time out injured or playing the role of an impact substitute.
