The goalkeeper, who was also wanted by Arsenal, has agreed to join Celtic, and a deal has already been signed.

Celtic's transfer business will need to pick up some pace this summer. While teams around them have been completing signings already, the Hoops have remained stuck in one place.

This comes despite their underwhelming 25/26 campaign. While a double might have been secured, the standards did drop.

Celtic scored 39 fewer goals and conceded 15 more when compared to the previous league campaign. They were somewhat fortunate that the Rangers ended up having a poor campaign as well and were not there to capitalise.

Even then, the title race went right down to the wire, and it took a win over Hearts in the final league game to leapfrog them and secure the Premiership title.

So, all things considered, reinforcements are needed. And a goalkeeper is now set to arrive, although he is unlikely to be involved in the first-team picture any time soon.

Celtic agree deal to sign goalkeeper

According to the Daily Record, Celtic have won the race to sign Warren Lyall from Dundee. The Scotland goalkeeper has signed his first professional contract with the Glasgow giants.

Lyall had been on Arsenal’s radar. The 16-year-old goalkeeper had a training stint with the Premier League champions back in February and they were believed to be keen on signing him.

So, this has to be considered a major coup for Celtic. They have done well to win the race for Lyall's signature.

Now, it remains to be seen how his development goes. The club do not have a great track record in recent years when it comes to providing a pathway into the senior team for academy players.

Celtic need to sign a quality senior goalkeeper

Lyall's addition is a long-term positive for the club. But they will need to think about their goalkeeping options in the present as well.

Viljami Sinisalo played his part in helping Celtic win the double. Not everybody is convinced that he is the long-term answer in goal though.

The underlying numbers would back that theory up. He underperformed his xGOT last season and conceded more goals than the data suggests he should have. Sinisalo also had a below-average 60.5% save percentage.

The only area where he was a standout was his passing. Other than that, it is hard to find a category where he was even in the 60th percentile or higher.

Of course, it is very possible that Sinisalo could improve further. He deserves credit for stepping into the starting role when Kasper Schmeichel got injured and eventually had to retire because of it.

With a full pre-season and that experience under his belt, he could be a much more rounded goalkeeper next season. But as things stand, Celtic should at the very least bring in some genuine competition for him.
