It had looked like Celtic's hopes of signing Andy Robertson were over after news of Spurs' verbal agreement emerged, but now there is a twist in the situation.

Celtic Still Eyeing Robertson

Andy Robertson was part of Celtic's youth ranks in his early teens. He was allowed to leave the club though, as it was thought that he did not have the physical attributes to make it at the top level. A couple of Premier League titles and a Champions League medal later, the Scottish national captain was being linked with a return to his boyhood club lately.

In the past, Robertson had openly admitted that he still dreamt of playing for Celtic, which added to the speculation.

When it was officially announced that Robertson would be leaving Liverpool as a free agent in the summer, whispers about a return to Celtic grew stronger.

But then, it looked like the dream was over as Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Tottenham Hotspur had a verbal agreement in place with Robertson.

Fans gave up hope of seeing Robertson in the green-and-white jersey. The same cannot be said about the club though.

According to TEAMtalk, Celtic have not abandoned hope of bringing Robertson back to Scotland yet.

And why should they? Tottenham Hotspur currently find themselves in the relegation zone in the Premier League. They are two points adrift of West Ham United in 17th. And Spurs have some tough games coming up.

They will still need to deal with Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Everton, Leeds United, Aston Villa and Wolves. That is not the easiest run to end the season. Nothing seems easy for Spurs these days anyway.

Ange Postecoglou was sacked in the summer but now, it looks like he might have pulled off a miracle winning the Europa League last season. Thomas Frank did not last long. Igor Tudor was shown the exit door quickly as well.

The club have brought in Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager. He lost his first game in charge and there is no guarantee that the highly-rated Italian will be able to guide Spurs to safety.

If they do end up getting relegated, the Robertson deal could be in danger of falling apart. And that could be the chance for Celtic to swoop in.

It looks like the club might be planning to wait on the wings and see how things turn out for Spurs this season. That being said, even if Celtic are successful in signing Robertson, where would he fit in a squad that already has Kieran Tierney?

Scott Clarke has been able to play them together but Celtic are unlikely to play that system. For now, let's wait and watch.
