The Celtic player attended a Birmingham City game recently as he continues to be linked with a summer move away from Parkhead.
The Celtic squad seems to have grown stagnant over time and needs a shakeup this summer. That might mean saying goodbye to quite a few who have been at the club since the Ange Postecoglou days. But unfortunately, it might be best for all parties to part ways.
Celtic's goals have dried up this season. Of course, the lion's share of the blame falls on the strikers. Kelechi Iheanacho continues to struggle with form and fitness. He does not look ready to start and is only an option on the bench at the moment.
On the other hand, the likes of Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu are not prolific enough to be starting for Celtic. But Martin O'Neill does not have too many other options available to him right now.
Another reason behind Celtic's decreased output has to be the dip in Daizen Maeda's form. The Japanese international had been phenomenal in front of goal last season, scoring 33 times. This time around, he has only managed eight goals so far and might not even enter double digits for the campaign.
It is worth mentioning that Maeda seemed interested in a move away from Celtic in the summer but that was blocked.
An understandable decision as the club could not lose Nicolas Kuhn and Maeda, their two best players last season, in the same summer window. But in hindsight, letting him go back then might have been the better choice.
Maeda is expected to leave this summer but Celtic will probably only get a fraction of what they could have a year ago. Of course, not many could have foreseen how badly his form would dip.
According to National Today, Maeda travelled to England to attend a Birmingham City match in the EFL Championship.
Naturally, this will give rise to rumours that Maeda might have an interest in a move to the Championship club. And to be honest, it would not be a far-fetched guess.
Birmingham City clearly have been keeping an eye on Celtic players. They have already signed Tomoki Iwata. And in the summer, they were on the verge of completing a move for Yang Hyun-jun before it collapsed at the last minute. They also have Kyogo on their books.
So, Birmingham City having an interest in Maeda is not improbable. Now, it remains to be seen if this leads to any sort of move or if the Japanese forward was just there to show support for his old teammates.
Maeda has been at Celtic since early 2022. And he has been an integral part of all the club's success since then, both under Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers. His cycle at Parkhead might be coming to an end. But if he does end up in the English Championship, it would be a bit disappointing, to be frank.
