Celtic have been tipped to sign the 25-year-old Scottish player on a free transfer this summer.
There are a variety of positions where Celtic should be looking to strengthen in the upcoming summer transfer window. This squad lacks genuine quality all across the pitch, which is why they have been struggling to compete with even domestic teams lately.
Even last season, Celtic had cruised their way to the league title. And their dip in form over the past year-and-a-half or so has been concerning to say the least.
The board have come in for heavy criticism for failing to make useful additions. They have signed far too many players who are not good enough. A decent portion of their new signings are not even getting a look-in in a poor Celtic team. That tells you everything you need to know about where the Hoops stand right now.
One of the areas where Celtic must improve this summer is between the posts. Kasper Schmeichel will be leaving at the end of his contract. The Dane's career might be over as well, as he is currently out with a long-term injury at 39 years of age. We can only wish him the best moving forward.
Are Celtic convinced that Viljami Sinisalo is the man to be the number in the long run? Or should they start looking to bring in competition for the Finland international?
One player Celtic have been linked with in recent times is Jon McCracken. His current deal with Dundee FC is set to expire at the end of this campaign, which makes him an even more attractive target for clubs.
McCracked has been backed as someone who can compete for a starting spot for Celtic. According to Football Insider, Keith Wyness said:
“He would challenge for the number one position pretty quickly.
“I spoke to my Scottish contacts, and they said he seems to have it all. But we all know Scottish goalkeepers haven’t got great reputations.
“There’s a long story about that. But nevertheless, McCracken is one that could come through quite well. And he’s got the athletic ability and is still very young.
“I think he’s a good potential number two to push for number one pretty quickly and definitely one for the future.”
McCracked would not be a high-profile addition to this Celtic team by any means. But he is someone who has put up some solid numbers this season.
He has made 125 saves, which is the highest in the Premiership in this campaign. He is also in the 86th percentile for goals prevented with 5.38 and the 73rd percentile for high claims.
It is hard to compare him with Sinisalo, considering the little amount of football that the latter has played, only replacing Schmeichel after his injury. That being said, McCracken does have a much better save percentage at 70.2% compared to the Finnish international's 62.5%.
Now, time shall tell whether Celtic end up making a move for McCracken or not. He is someone who would be a no-brainer of a signing if the Hoops want someone as a cover option. But if they are unconvinced by Sinisalo and want a nailed-on starter, perhaps the club should be aiminig higher.
