Martin O'Neill has named one Celtic issue that he is concerned by and will be looking to rectify it next week.
It would be an understatement to say that Celtic have their problems right now. In fact, they have a whole mountain of issues that they need to deal with. But with just six league games left in the campaign, and a potential shot at winning the Scottish Cup, now might not be the time to fix all their problems.
For now, most of the issues will have to be swept under the carpet. Hopefully, the board will take care of them in the summer.
That being said, there are some that need to be taken care of as soon as possible if Celtic are to have any hope of winning the league and the Scottish Cup.
One of them has to be the toothless, low energy level performances that the club have been putting in for some time. The Hoops had started well against St Mirren on Saturday but ran out of steam quickly. Eventually, they had enough in the tank to secure a 1-0 win. That kind of a display won't be good enough to beat Rangers, Hearts and Motherwell though.
With the post-split fixtures set to start, and the Scottish Cup semi-final coming up, Martin O'Neill has admitted that this is an area of concern for the Hoops and something he will be looking to rectify.
According to The Herald, O'Neill said: “We didn’t play very well. I thought the energy levels looked low, which I think if it had been the last 10 minutes of the game, and you’re holding on to something, I can understand that, but it set in pretty early in the second half, which is a bit of a concern.
“We’ll try to rectify that if we can for next week. We need to. Winning the game was really important, but we didn’t play well.
“You look at what we did this week, we’ll maybe change it a little bit around, but we’ll never know. It seemed to befall a number of us at the same time, which is a bit of a worry.
“We’ve stayed in the hunt, and in fairness to the players they did dig it out in the end, so it was good.
“St Mirren played very well, had control of good wee parts of the game, particularly in the second half, and we just couldn’t get the elusive second goal, a wee bit like Dundee last week, but this time I thought we created much less.
“But we stayed strong, we defended at the corners and free-kicks pretty well, and St Mirren played very well.”
That is a very honest assessment of how things played out for Celtic in the game against St Mirren. Now, it remains to be seen if he can find a way to rectify the matter before the next game.
Of course, one cannot overlook the fact that this is the final phase of the season. So, it is pretty natural for squads to show a bit of fatigue at this point in the campaign. Celtic are not the only ones. Just look around Europe at some of the other top clubs.
Arsenal, who had looked like a winning machine not too long ago, have started to stumble. Real Madrid's form has faded away in recent weeks. Chelsea have won one out of their last six Premier League games. Aston Villa have not been the same either.
It might have a lot to do with the amount of football that players are being asked to play now. And add Celtic's injury problems to this, and it is unsurprising that the team seems out of steam already.
For the majority of the campaign, Celtic have not been able to rely on their depth, which should be one of their strengths as a big club in Scotland. Several of their key players are out injured. On the other hand, quite a few who have been brought in do not seem to be in the manager's plans and are not contributing.
So, it will be very interesting to see how O'Neill goes about trying to solve this issue. Will he give more playing time to some of the rotational options? Can he afford to, when the demand is to win every game to stay in the title race?
