Anthony Joseph has confirmed that Martin O'Neill wants Celtic to sign the forward, who scored 22 goals last season.

There is a recognition that Celtic need to add some quality to their squad this summer. But the club's poor recruitment record in recent times means that fans are not confident that will happen.

A lot of the time, Celtic have not shown enough ambition, urgency or efficiency in the transfer market. But also, when they have brought in players, they have often gotten the recruitment wrong.

Signing proven talents in Scotland might be one way to decrease the chances of the recruitment going wrong once again. And it looks like Martin O'Neill has a Premiership-proven forward on his radar.

Martin O'Neill wants Celtic to sign Motherwell player

Motherwell were arguably the best footballing side in Scotland last season. And a lot of that was down to their forward play.

Of course, Elijah Just has grabbed most of the headlines lately, thanks to his strong end to the season and then phenomenal World Cup campaign with New Zealand. That being said, Motherwell had several other exceptional talents as well.

Celtic have been linked with Just lately. But it looks like O'Neill wants the club to sign one of his teammates.

According to a report from Anthony Joseph, Tawanda Maswanhise is attracting interest from clubs around Europe this summer. Among them are Anderlecht, who've held a long-standing interest. O’Neill is also a keen admirer of the Zimbabwean forward but no approach has been made yet.

Would Maswanhise be a good signing?

Maswanhise played mostly as a centre-forward last season. But he is also very capable of operating on the wing.

Considering his output though, if Celtic did sign him, it is very likely that they will continue to deploy him up top.

Maswanhise scored 22 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions last season. And one would imagine that he would score even more frequently if he ended up joining Celtic.

In recent times, we have quite often seen Celtic get linked with players from other Scottish clubs, but then fail to get deals done as they head out of Scotland to join other leagues. Could that happen with someone like Maswanhise as well?

To be very honest, it is possible. Maswanhise would have attracted the interest of clubs from across Europe, owing to his displays for Motherwell last season.

So, if Celtic are serious about signing him, they should move quickly. One can only wonder why the Hoops have allowed things to drag on once again while the Rangers seem so active across town.
