Callum McGregor has been a stalwart for Celtic over the years, but he has now been tipped to make a move away from Parkhead.
Celtic have two players who have done and seen everything at Parkhead. One of them is James Forrest, who has never played for another club. The other is Callum McGregor, who also came through the Hoops' youth system and has gone on to become captain.
While Forrest has been a bit-part player for several years now, McGregor has been an integral part of the Celtic starting XI for a long, long time now.
This season, the club captain has been on the receiving end of quite a bit of criticism though. As Celtic have underperformed, many have pointed the finger towards McGregor.
Is it a fair criticism? Well, to a certain extent. That being said, the bigger issue might be the squad build. Celtic have not put the players around McGregor that he needs to perform at his best and play the role in which he thrives. There are no legs in midfield right now.
Most Celtic fans expect to see McGregor retire at the club someday, most probably as their most decorated player ever. But some rumours have also been swirling in the background about a potential move to Al Qadsiah to reunite with Brendan Rodgers.
Frank McAvennie won't be surprised if that did happen this summer. According to The Glasgow Times, he said: "I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes and joins Brendan in Saudi Arabia.
"And he would go with my blessing, he’s been absolutely superb.
"He’s not getting found out, but he’s just not getting the players around to help him. At 33, you need younger legs, and he’d still be the catalyst — but he’s not got them at the moment.
"If he goes and [Daizen] Maeda and [Reo] Hatate... they are big gaps to fill."
Well, the likes of Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda leaving would be one thing, but McGregor departing would be something else. He is an institution at Celtic. Someone who will go down as an all-time great for the Hoops. And at 32 years of age, he should have a lot left in the tank.
McGregor can still be phenomenal for Celtic. But for that to happen, they need to play him in the right role and surround him with the correct players in the middle of the park. It should not be surprising that the Hoops are being linked with so many physical, defensive midfielders right now.
That being said, if McGregor does want to leave himself, then that wish should be respected. He has given everything to the club over the years. We would love to see him retire as a Celtic player someday. But at the end of the day, he should have the final call when it comes to his career.
In the scenario that McGregor does end up leaving, it would be a tough task to replace him. Not only would they need to bring in a player of that quality, but they would also need a leader and someone with proven winning experience. Those things are even harder to replace.
