Celtic are now one step closer to the €10 million signing after the club's Champions League play-off first leg win against LASK.
It is the morning after Celtic's 3-0 Champions League play-off first leg win over LASK. And what a victory it was!
There were three incredible goals on the night. Benjamin Nygren opened the scoring with a brilliant effort. Camilo Duran did him one better with a wonderful left-footed volley from outside the box. And the Colombian then added a third.
Of course, Celtic should not think that the tie has been put to bed just yet. LASK had plenty of chances on the other end as well. But they did not have their finishing boots on.
They might do in the second leg. And Celtic's away record in Europe or in Champions League qualifiers is not great in recent times. That being said, from this position, the Hoops have to be considered heavy favourites to go through.
Celtic signing depends on Champions League qualification
Obviously, successful qualification for the Champions League would mean a financial boost for Celtic as well. And with the Hoops having a foot in the competition already, it looks like they could be closer to another big-money signing.
According to journalist Giacomo Morandin (via Europa Calcio), Celtic could use the new financial resources guaranteed by potential European competition qualification to submit a transfer offer for Gvidas Gineitis.
To let Gineitis leave, Torino will want around €10 million. Celtic may be willing to make that kind of an offer, but only after consolidating their financial position through the Champions League.
So, qualification for the Champions League might determine what kind of player Celtic try to sign in midfield, following the departure of Arne Engels.
Celtic eyeing Gvidas Gineitis move
Celtic have added Mika Baur to their ranks recently, but he seems more similar to Reo Hatate than Engels.
Ginetis has been linked with a move to Celtic for quite some time now. But it looks like it all depends on whether the club are able to qualify for the Champions League or not.
If they succeed, it would result in Celtic making a push to sign Gineitis from Torino. If they don't, the Hoops might settle for someone who is available for a smaller transfer fee.
Gineitis is not the only midfielder Celtic have been linked with lately. They seem to have made progress in the pursuit of Niko Sigur as well. A Manchester United youngster is on their radar as well.
In many ways, this has always been the case for Celtic in the summer transfer window, whether the fans agree with the strategy or not.
For a change, they have actually made some solid signings this time around and one of them made the difference last night.
