It looks like Celtic are closing in on signing one of their long-term targets, who is keen on a move to Parkhead this summer.

The Celtic midfield is set to undergo a revamp this summer. While Callum McGregor is set to stay, despite rumours of a reunion with Brendan Rodgers, there are several others around him who have headed or will head for the exit door.

Arne Engels has joined West Ham United in a Championship record transfer. Paulo Bernardo has left on loan. And after more than four years at Celtic, it is widely expected that Reo Hatate will leave as well, and the Japanese international is believed to be seeking a move to a top-five league in Europe.

Obviously, that is a lot of talent in need of replacing. Engels was good enough to bring in a £22 million transfer fee. On his day, Hatate can be the best midfielder in Scottish football. Bernardo's exit is not going to have a significant effect, as he was not playing much, but it does affect the depth.

On the other hand, Celtic have Mika Baur. But more additions are needed in midfield. And it looks like they are closing in on the signing of a Canadian international.

Celtic closing in on next signing as player is keen on move

According to the Daily Record, Celtic have 'advanced' their pursuit of Niko Sigur. The Canadian international has his heart set on a switch to Parkhead this summer.

One stumbling block still remains though. It looks like Celtic will have to wait on Sigur, who is expected to be in Hajduk Split's line-up for their game with Rakow Czestochowa to reach the UEFA Conference League.

Obviously, it is a problem for Celtic to wait, as Engels and Bernardo have already left, while Hatate has not been a big part of Martin O'Neill's plans for a while now.

Then again, they have waited long enough for Sigur already. So, a few more days should not be a problem for them. The second leg of that said play-off tie is on 27 August.

Who is Niko Sigur?

Obviously, it is always good to bring in players who want to play for Celtic. That seems to be the case with Sigur.

Sigur is a full Canadian international, having represented his national team on 22 occasions. He has also spent his entire senior career at Hajduk Split.

So, the 22-year-old has an understanding of European football already. Of course, there are going to be some differences when it comes to playing for Hajduk Split and Celtic.

Alistair Johnston should know him well from their time playing for Canada. And it is worth mentioning that Sigur can play both in midfield and as a right-back, so, he can be a cover option for his Canadian international teammate.
