Celtic have reached a verbal agreement with the 28-year-old international player, who is keen on a move to Parkhead.
Celtic have completed four signings so far in this summer transfer window. And fans will be hoping for plenty more before it slams shut.
There are a number of positions where Celtic are still lacking genuine first-choice options or quality in depth.
It is one or the other when it comes to the goalkeeping spot, depending on how highly you rate Viljami Sinisalo.
Now, it looks like not only are Celtic are showing interest in a goalkeeper but he has already set his heart on a move to Parkhead.
Goalkeeper reaches verbal agreement to join Celtic
According to TEAMtalk, Balazs Toth is fully committed to making the move to Parkhead. The 28-year-old has given Celtic his verbal agreement and is keen to begin a new chapter in Glasgow.
Of course, if Celtic are successful in signing Toth, it would be an interesting move. We have rarely seen them bring in goalkeepers in the middle of their prime years.
Joe Hart was brought in after it had looked like his days as a starter were over. He spent three years as the number one at Celtic Park before retiring.
Kasper Schmeichel was older than Hart when he arrived at Celtic to replace the retiring Englishman. Two years later, he retired himself.
In contrast, Toth is 28 years of age. That would suggest that even if he does well, chances are that he would spend his prime at Celtic.
There is another reason why Celtic's interest in Toth is interesting. That is because the underlying numbers around the Hungarian international goalkeeper are not particularly impressive.
What does the data say about Toth?
This is not the first time that Celtic have been linked with a goalkeeper playing in the lower divisions this summer. Tjark Ernst and Dinko Horkas are two other clear examples of this.
In the case of Ernst and Horkas, they were clearly putting up exceptional numbers while playing in those lower divisions.
Before his move to Feyenoord, Ernst was at Hertha Berlin. In Bundesliga 2 last season, he had faced an xGOT of 52.52 and conceded only 44 goals.
Horkas, still at Spanish second-division side Las Palmas, faced an xGOT of 43.03 and conceded 39 times in La Liga 2.
Toth is not putting up these numbers though. On the contrary, he underperformed his xGOT. And his passing numbers were not good either.
So, one has to wonder why Celtic have decided to pursue a move for Toth. Is it something that is not coming up in the data, but they are convinced will work when he plays for a top-of-the-table club instead of one trying to avoid relegation?
