Celtic have been handed a boost heading into their Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren this weekend.

Celtic's best chance of winning a trophy this season is the Scottish Cup. They are in the semi-finals, where they will be facing St Mirren at Hampden Park.

Of course, it is not going to be a cakewalk by any means. The last time they faced St Mirren at Hampden Park, Celtic lost 3-1 in the League Cup final earlier this very season. Also, considering how tight their games have been lately, it would be a mistake to think that the result of this fixture is a foregone conclusion. Far from it.

Celtic will need to put their best foot forward. It has been a long time since they won a game in convincing fashion, even domestically.

Fortunately, there is some good news for Celtic on the injury front heading into their game against St Mirren. It looks like club captain Callum McGregor is fit to take part.

McGregor is believed to have played through injury away at Paisley. So, there were some doubts about his availability for the Scottish Cup semi-final. It looks like as things stand, he is expected to take part.

According to The Herald, Martin O'Neill said ahead of the game against St Mirren:

"Callum McGregor is not any worse, that's good news.

"He wants to play, and it's a matter of maybe X number of minutes for him again this week.

"For him right now, I’m also guided by him and he would like to play. As he pulled out the time a couple of weeks before, missed out some big games but he did it for the good of the team. So he thought, 'I'm not capable of doing this'.

"If he said this to me tomorrow, I wouldn't play him if that's the case but he thinks he's capable of doing it and that if he stays on for as long as he did the last time, great news.

"But in the longer term of trying to stay in the league race, then of course if he picks up something, then you’d think 'Oh okay, didn't get that right'."

McGregor has faced some criticism this season. But one cannot overlook the fact that the entire team has struggled over the course of the season.

Also, at this moment in time, it does not look like Celtic have the best players to get the best out of someone like McGregor. They just don't have enough legs in the middle of the park and end up getting played through the middle at times.

It is not just his quality that McGregor brings to the team but his leadership quality as well. At this point in the season, Celtic need someone who has been there and done that several times over, both in the league and in cup competitions.

In the long run, it will be very interesting to see what the future holds for McGregor as well. He has been linked with a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Al-Qadsiah.

At 32 years of age, he should have plenty of football left in the tank and most fans would want to see him finish his career at Celtic. That being said, if he does want a move to the Saudi Pro League, his wishes need to be respected as well after what he has given to the club over all these years as a player and as captain.
