The 21-goal striker looks set to be on the move this summer, handing Celtic a boost in their attempts to sign him.
It would be safe to say that Celtic need some quality up front. Kelechi Iheanacho looks like the only striker capable of scoring goals at the moment. But he has not been helped by his fitness issues, and Martin O'Neill seems reluctant to start him at the moment due to concerns that he might pick up some sort of injury.
On the other hand, the club's other centre-forwards have disappointed. Tomas Cvancara was brought in on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach in the winter and has proven to be extremely ineffective in front of goal.
Junior Adamu's time at the club since his loan move from SC Freiburg has proven to be even worse. Both are expected to head back to their respective Bundesliga clubs in the summer even though Celtic have options to buy.
In recent weeks, Daizen Maeda has been playing centrally again and doing a tremendous job at it. But there are question marks over the Japanese international's long-term future at the club. He had intended to leave last summer itself.
That leaves Celtic in a tough spot and in need of strengthening their options going forward. Fortunately, it looks like one of their rumoured targets is going to be on the move soon.
According to Alan Nixon (via Football Insider), Lorent Tolaj “may” be transferred by Plymouth Argyle this summer.
While that comes as positive news for Celtic, there is added interest in him as well. Sheffield United, Leicester City and Preston North End are all said to be eyeing the Swiss striker.
Of course, the level of interest should not come as a surprise. Tolaj has scored 21 goals and provided seven assists in 38 games across all competitions this season. Also, at 24 years of age, he is only expected to get better moving forward.
One mistake that Celtic made in the winter transfer window is that they signed two strikers who were out of form before arriving at Parkhead. Neither Cvancara nor Adamu were scoring goals in the first half of the season.
So, the fact that they have failed to find the back of the net on a consistent basis for Celtic should not come as any sort of surprise.
Moving forward, Celtic should focus on strikers who are in good touch in front of goal. And Tolaj falls under that category. Of course, if the club cannot convince the League One striker to head to Parkhead, then that should be a matter of concern.
