Celtic now have the chance to sign the Leeds United player for free as the official announcement has been made.

With Martin O'Neill's appointment now officially confirmed, Celtic can turn their focus towards strengthening the squad. Quality signings need to be made and key players, who are expected to leave, need to be replaced.

Several areas might be strengthened this summer. The club have already been linked with multiple midfielders. That is understandable considering the uncertainty around players like Arne Engels and Benjamin Nygren as well as the almost certain departure of Reo Hatate.

The Hoops have also been linked with Elias Filet, the 22-goal striker, as it is clear that they need more quality up top, especially if Daizen Maeda ends up leaving, as is expected to be the case.

On the other hand, goalkeeper might potentially be one area which is being overlooked at the moment, although strengthening there might be just as important.

Kasper Schmeichel's time at Celtic has come to an end. In fact, he has announced his retirement from the game due to his shoulder injury.

In the process, he has become the second legendary goalkeeper to retire at Celtic after Joe Hart, both being brought in in the twilight of their careers.

Viljami Sinisalo did well to take over from him in the middle of the season and provide some stability between the posts. That being said, is the Finnish international being viewed as the long-term solution? Or do Celtic want to strengthen there? At the very least, they will need to bring in some competition.

Illier Meslier is someone they have been linked with heavily in the past, especially in the recent winter transfer window.

A move did not happen back then, but it has become a lot easier to pull off now. That is because Leeds United have officially announced that Meslier will leave this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

It is not hard to see why that kind of move might be attractive to Celtic. He is a 26-year-old goalkeeper with tons of Premier League experience, available as a free agent.

That being said, a move for Meslier would come with its fair share of risks. There is a reason he did not make a single appearance last season after being the Leeds United number one for five years.

That is because Meslier had made numerous errors in recent times and one would imagine Leeds United wanted someone more reliable between the posts.

On top of his game, Meslier is very highly regarded. He was one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe at one point. But it would be safe to say that he is an error-prone goalie as well.

So, are Celtic willing to take that risk? Or will they look for someone who is more dependable on a week-to-week basis?

In my opinion, a risk might be worth it. If it works, Celtic have a quality goalkeeper for years to come. If it does, we know that Sinisalo is a capable backup option.
