Martin O'Neill has commented on Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham amid worrying rumours about their futures.

There are many aspects to coaching. Some are motivators who like their players to do the talking on the pitch. Others are tacticians who want every detail of the game to be pre-planned. Which category does Martin O'Neill fall under? Well, to Celtic fans, he is most definitely a winner.

O'Neill was brought out of managerial retirement to take on the Celtic job on an interim basis, not once, but twice, last season. And he did better than anybody could have expected.

While the performances might not have been much to write home about, Celtic did deliver results under O'Neill. A weak squad, further weakened by long-term injuries, managed to finish the season with a league and cup double.

It could have very well have been a treble, if Celtic had not gone for the Wilfried Nancy experiment in the middle of the campaign, which lasted all of 33 days and cost them the Scottish League Cup final, which O'Neill had done so well to guide them to.

Anyways, O'Neill will get the chance to win it again, as he has been announced as the permanent manager of the club at 74 years of age.

There is some uncertainty around the future of his backroom team though as they have not been officially confirmed. That includes Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham.

O'Neill spoke fondly about the two recently. According to CeltsAreHere, he said:

“Coming back after 20-odd years, whatever the case may be, I never thought this would ever happen. Totally and utterly surreal.

“And to be back in the dugout at Celtic Park after all those years. To see Shaun and Mark Fotheringham, two lads that I coached."

Celtic fans will be hoping to see them continue in their roles as well. It would not make sense to break up a team that brought them so much success under challenging conditions in the previous campaign.

Obviously, when appointments such as this end up getting delayed, it leaves room for speculation to arise. That was the case with O'Neill a few days back. And it has been the case with Maloney and Fotheringham as well.

There are growing rumours on social media that Maloney and Fotheringham have been offered reduced terms to continue their roles. Is that accurate?

It is hard to be certain. There are often hold-ups and a matter of getting final details ironed out. Let's not forget, many were worried about O'Neill not signing as well.

So, the best path forward would be to wait and see how this all plays out over the coming weeks and months.

One would hope that Celtic ensure that the coaching team remains in place. Otherwise, it could be another misstep from a board that has had so many over the years.

O'Neill himself has hinted at how important his coaches were on a tactical level last season. They need to be shown the respect that they deserve for it.
