Celtic have been handed some more bad news about the coaching situation amid uncertainty around Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham.

Generally, you would not expect the status of a club's first-team coaches to get the headlines. But after that job that Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham did last season, helping turn the campaign around for Celtic, it is not hard to see why the fans are keen to see them stay in the dugout alongside Martin O'Neill.

An unexpected rumour has emerged though, suggesting that both have been offered lower wages, which is why their returns have not been sorted yet even though O'Neill has already been announced as the new permanent manager.

If that is indeed the case, then it would be a new low for Celtic's ambitions, failing to keep coaches around over wages.

It is not just Maloney and Fotheringham who might not be in the dugout come next season though.

According to Celtic Shorts, West Bromwich Albion are interested in recruiting Celtic first-team coach Gavin Strachan.

Strachan is very highly rated at Celtic and has been at the club for many years. That being said, it is very possible that he might be attracted to the idea of coaching down south. West Brom might potentially even offer him a bigger role and a better pathway to the next steps than he has at Celtic.

If Celtic see Maloney, Fotheringham and Strachan somehow depart, in the same summer transfer window, then it would be a major blow for the club.

It would also be putting unnecessary pressure on a 74-year-old O'Neill, who has been happy to admit that his coaching staff played a big role in the club's success last season.

If this is indeed the situation at Celtic behind the scenes, then one has to seriously question the direction in which the club is headed.

How can they struggle to keep hold of coaches, not even a top-tier manager, like Ange Postecoglou leaving for Tottenham? It is a bit of a headscratcher, to be very honest about it.

If coaches do end up leaving Celtic, O'Neill would have to make sure that he finds the proper replacements for them.

Of course, that will only make his job more difficult this summer and he might soon start regretting not leaving on a high when he could have on the back of a double and taking this task on, potentially without any of the coaches that had helped him in the previous campaign. It should have never reached this situation.
