It looks like Celtic want to bring in a World Cup midfielder to replace Arne Engels, if the Belgian leaves this summer.
Pretty much every summer, there is a big-money departure from Celtic. Last time around, it was Nicolas Kuhn joining Como. The year before that, Matt O'Riley made the move to Brighton & Hove Albion. If you go further back, Jota's move to Al-Ittihad fits the definition.
There is little reason to believe that trend will come to an end this summer. But there are multiple candidates this time around.
Daizen Maeda seems like the most likely one headed for the exit door after the Henrik Larsson-esque end to the previous campaign, as he inspired the Hoops to a league and cup double, almost on his own at times.
But Maeda might not be the only one. Arne Engels is also being heavily linked with a move away after the club turned down a £25 million offer in the winter window.
Celtic did the right thing by not allowing him to leave in the middle of the season. But they might not have the same resolve if a record bid comes in this summer.
That is very likely to happen as well. Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham are all believed to be interested in Engels.
From Italy, there is interest from Napoli as well. So, do not be surprised to see Engels head for the exit door this summer.
If Engels does end up leaving, Celtic will need to bring in a proper replacement. And it does look like a World Cup midfielder is on their sights.
Celtic have already been linked with one Bosnian & Herzegovina international in the form of Benjamin Tahirovic. But he is not the only one on their radar.
According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic chiefs are monitoring Ivan Basic at the World Cup.
Celtic are on the lookout for possible replacements for Engels, with Basic on their list of targets.
Basic started Bosnia & Herzegovina's opener against Canada in the middle of the park alongside Tahirovic and played for more than an hour.
At club level, he features for Astana in the Kazakh league. So, it is safe to say that Celtic are spreading their scouting network far and wide.
It might be a bit of a let down to many though if the club bring in Basic to replace someone like Engels.
Engels does not get the credit that he deserves a lot of the time. It was only after his return that Celtic went on an eight-game winning run to finish off the season and secure the double.
So, he might not be someone whose name fills up the stat sheet. He clearly has an impact on the team's winning chances though.
