Signing a striker or two needs to be at the very top of the wish list for Celtic this summer. The Hoops simply have not scored enough this season, which might be the root cause behind most of their troubles.

Just compare things with the previous campaign. Celtic had found the back of the net on 112 occasions. This time around, they managed just 73 goals.

That is a difference of 39 goals. A significant number. And it is somewhat remarkable that the Hoops were able to win the league title despite regressing so badly in front of goal.

While that kind of efficiency deserves credit, it cannot be something that becomes the long-term strategy. Celtic need to find a way to get back to scoring more than 100 goals in a league season.

The easiest way to do that would be sign some quality strikers. We all saw the difference in can make in the last few games of the season. In many ways, Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho were the two most important players in this league triumph.

Maeda found the best form of his Celtic career in the final few weeks of the season, after finally getting to start centrally again. Unfortunately, it might also be his last few appearances for the club as he is widely expected to leave this summer. If he does, he has secured his 'legend' status over the past few months.

On the other hand, Iheanacho was immense off the bench. He scored so many winners as a late substitute. While many continued to ask for him to start, O'Neill got it absolutely spot on, using the Nigerian striker at a time when he had the best chance of impacting a game, against tired legs of opposition defenders. Let's see if his contract is extended.

Anyways, more quality is needed up top. At least another striker needs to be brought in. And Kieron Bowie might be an option worth considering again.

Bowie was a target for Celtic in the winter. But he ended up completing a €5 million move to Hellas Verona. It has proven to be one that has not paid off.

Hellas Verona are 19th in the Serie A table and are sure to be relegated. So, either Bowie can spend next season playing in Serie B or look for a change of clubs already.

While Hellas Verona might be getting relegated from Serie A, Bowie's four goals in 13 games is not a bad return when you consider the circumstances.

Hellas Verona have scored just 25 goals all season in Serie A. So even after arriving in the winter, Bowie has managed to score almost 20% of his team's goals for the campaign. 

He is being linked with clubs in Italy, Germany and England. Celtic should throw their hat in the ring as well.
