It looks like the frontrunner for the Celtic job is clear as he is said to have quit his current post.
Celtic will be looking to complete the double tomorrow when they take to the Hampden Park pitch against Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup final. That would be a remarkable achievement when you consider how poor the Hoops have been throughout the course of the campaign.
If anything, it further underlines the difference between Celtic and the rest of the Scottish teams. Even at their worst, the Hoops were good enough to win the league and could do the double this weekend.
In the long run, Celtic do need to improve. And that might start with bringing in a long-term manager.
Martin O'Neill has done a tremendous job over the course of his two interim spells. If Celtic had just stuck with him instead of bringing in Wilfried Nancy, they might have been vying to complete the treble this weekend.
Under ideal circumstances, Celtic would have continued with O'Neill. But he is 74 years of age and has spoken about the toll these games take on him on more than one occasion. The best thing might be to continue with him in a behind-the-scenes role.
But then, who will be the next Celtic manager? Jens Berthel Askou has joined Toulouse. Steve Clarke looks set to extend his contract with Scotland. The options are dwindling.
But a clear frontrunner seems to have emerged now as well. Someone who might have already taken the first step towards a move to Parkhead.
According to Nemzeti Sport, Robbie Keane is leaving Ferencvaros. The reason has not been specified. He is also said to be among the candidates to become the coach of the Slovak champions, Slovan Bratislava.
That being said, to us, it feels a lot more likely that this move is pointing towards a move to Celtic this summer.
He is a former Celtic player and a big name. Also, he has proven his mettle as a coach. And while a section of the fanbase might not be happy with the appointment, it feels like one that could work for the club.
Keane has the reputation to earn the respect of the dressing room from day one. And he has also shown that he can manage teams to trophies during his time at Ferencvaros and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
It remains to be seen if this ends up happening or not. For the time being, it is still speculation. But all the pieces fit. Now, let's see if this picks up some pace over the next few days or not.
