It looks like Celtic have submitted a £3.8 million bid for the player after confirmation from Fabrizio Romano that personal terms were agreed.
Celtic's transfer business is finally picking up some pace. So far, Camilo Duran remains the only signing of the summer window. But that looks set to change soon as we head towards the beginning of the new campaign, which is just a week away.
Celtic also recently agreed a club-record transfer fee of £11 million plus bonuses to sign Kasper Hogh.
It is understandable why the forward department has been their focus. Their two best strikers from last season, Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda, have both already left this summer.
But there are other areas of the pitch where they will need to bring in reinforcements, too. One of them is their midfield.
Celtic make new bid to sign Mika Baur
According to George Tsarouchas, Celtic have offered €3.5 million plus €1 million in bonuses for the transfer of Mika Baur. But SC Paderborn are still demanding €5 million with immediate effect.
The journalist also points out that just like Duran, Mika Baur's first option is also to sign with Celtic, which could prove important.
Of course, Fabrizio Romano had already confirmed a few days back that Celtic had agreed personal terms with Baur.
So, it was widely expected that Baur would be the club's second signing of the summer transfer window. But now, it looks like that is going to be Hogh, after a club-record deal was agreed with Bodo/Glimt for the striker who scored against Manchester City, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last season.
As for Baur, it remains to be seen if Celtic can find an agreement with SC Paderborn over the transfer fee or not. The gap in valuation is not huge, so one would expect a resolution to be found, hopefully soon.
Would Baur be a good signing for Celtic?
Baur was an integral part of the SC Paderborn team that earned promotion to the Bundesliga last season.
He is also 22 years of age and has represented Germany at a variety of youth levels. So, it feels like the right time for him to make the jump.
That being said, it is hard to predict how a player would deal with the jump from a second division team to life at a club like Celtic.
It is not just about having the quality but the mentality as well. Not everybody can deal with the pressure of being expected to win every domestic match they take part in.
