An official announcement has been made by Celtic as Martin O'Neill's has quickly been granted by the club.
There has not been much in terms of good news for Celtic in recent months. Going into the post-split fixtures, they have left themselves a lot of work to do. The only positive is that they will play against their title rivals. All they can do is win their games in hand and then hope for luck to favour them a bit as well.
In the long run, the club need to make several additions to their current squad. But at the same time, they need to keep hold of the quality talent that they already have.
Fortunately, it looks like there is one player who will be continuing on at Celtic next season as an extension has been agreed, after his previous deal was set to run out in the summer.
Of course, we are talking about none other than James Forrest. The long-time Celtic winger has signed another extension as he is set to continue his run as a one-club man.
Celtic made the announcement earlier today, confirmed that Forrest had signed on for another year and his new deal now runs until the summer of 2027.
Of course, it is worth mentioning that the extension comes soon after Martin O'Neill had spoken openly in the media about how he wanted the club to keep Forrest. So, the manager's wish has been granted, although he is not going to be the one coaching them next season.
We saw what Forrest is still capable of in the game against St Mirren. He came off the bench to assist Kelechi Iheanacho's header, which put Celtic ahead in extra-time and they did not look back after that, scoring three more goals and winning 6-2.
Forrest's direct wing play can still give opposition defences a tough time, especially when he is used as a late substitute and comes on to have a go at tired legs.
Obviously, Forrest has not been a regular starter for years now. But based on the lack of quality and depth at Celtic right now, it would not be a major surprise if he does get a few starts between now and the end of the season.
The likes of Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Joel Mvuka have done nothing of note since joining the club. Forrest remains a better option even at this point in his career.
From an emotional point of view, a lot of Celtic fans would like to see him finish his career as a one-club man and retire at Parkhead. That is something that you rarely get in modern football. Even Callum McGregor spent a season out on loan. But Forrest has never pulled on another jersey. Why not keep it that way?
