Celtic should be keeping an eye on the Leeds United midfielder, who could be looking to leave in the summer.
The Celtic squad could look very different come next season. There are a lot of players who have not been able to meet expectations over the course of the campaign. Then there are those who have been eyeing the exit door for a while.
All things considered, there are expected to be quite a few incomings and outgoings at Parkhead come the end of the season.
The midfield department is one worth keeping an eye on in this respect. Reo Hatate is likely to leave after four-and-a-half seasons with the club. One would imagine that Paulo Bernardo will be pushing for an exit as well after the little game time he has received.
Arne Engels was on the receiving end of a £25 million transfer offer in the winter. Celtic turned it down. Will they do the same if a similar bid was made again this summer?
There have also been rumours around Benjamin Nygren, who has scored 19 goals from midfield this season and is another player who could be on the radar of Premier League clubs.
Then there is Callum McGregor. The long-time Celtic captain. The man who has come through the academy and become a legend. Recently, there have been some rumours about a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Al-Qadsiah.
So, pretty much the entire Celtic midfield is being linked with moves away from the club. Naturally, the club must be keeping an eye out for potential replacements. And one Leeds United midfielder might be an excellent signing for the Hoops, if there is an opportunity to bring him to Parkhead in the summer.
According to Football Insider, Leeds United fear Ao Tanaka could push to leave in the summer transfer window amid concerns about his playing time.
Tanaka has only started nine games for Leeds United in the Premier League this season. Overall, he has played a little over 1200 minutes of football across all competitions in the 25/26 campaign.
So, it is not hard to understand why Tanaka might push for a Leeds United exit in the summer. And if he does become available, he is the quality of midfielder that should be on the radar of the Hoops.
Tanaka can play both as a number 8 and as a defensive midfielder, both roles where Celtic could do with some reinforcements.
Tanaka has appeared consistently for the Japan national team and has 37 international caps to his name, scoring eight goals in the process.
Of course, we all know what Japanese players have been able to achieve in Celtic colours over the years. Could Tanaka join that illustrious list soon?
